“Hi, guys! I’m Dashiell! I’m a storyteller, public speaker, athlete, college student and YES, a rising filmmaker! I want to show people with disabilities in my films because of the perspectives and possibilities of storytelling. I am an advocate for disability rights. There are a lot of negative stereotypes and myths about Down syndrome. What I want everyone to know is-

I am my own person and I am PROUD to have Down syndrome!

My life is great because I have Trisomy 21, not in spite of it. Our lives are worthwhile because we have a chance to prove ourselves. But not just prove ourselves. We can also influence change in this world- BUT- we can only do that together!

We have a chance to just be ourselves and live our best lives because that’s what we’re all about! And when we do that, there’s nothing we can’t do!”

Last year I was honored to speak at the United Nations in New York for World Down Syndrome Day! I spoke about health equity for people with Trisomy 21.

I made friends with people all over the world and I hope I can visit you all someday!

Here is the beginning of Chapter 14 and each slide has quotes from each self advocate! This is one of my favorite chapters of the newly published, “Happiness is Down Syndrome- Strategies and Support for Parents at Every Stage.”

“I have a confession to make, and I hope one or two of you can relate. As a fierce advocate for my five year-old son, I can sometimes speak out without thinking things through. I’m a passionate, often impulsive, person, and the urge to voice my opinion before listening and learning to self-advocates can be strong. The reality is, there are adults with Down syndrome who have much to say about the life they are leading. We just need to be willing to have ears to listen.

I’m an official researcher!

I was in Washington DC and I took a class through @fwddoc to learn how to search the National Archives and the Library of Congress for information for my documentary about the history of Down syndrome!

I will be making another trip and share more about what I’m learning about our history. The librarians and archivists are very helpful but we haven’t found a whole lot of information yet, but that is also important what is not recorded . by @dashiellmeier

NYC recap! I had an amazing time with my friends and my mom and my sister!

We saw three shows - Hadestown, the play that goes wrong and oh, Mary!

We got to eat at Serendipity and had the most amazing desserts!

I did two photo shoots — stay tuned — and went to Fashion Week!

I went to a Baseball game of the Yankees vs Mets and sadly the Mets lost.

I feel so proud to see everyone’s photos in Times Square to show how beautiful and amazing people with Down syndrome are.

My first New York Fashion Week! My friend @kennedyjean04 walked in the @supermodelsunlimitedmag show and I got to go with my sister @maris.lol! Kennedy was amazing and we had a great time!
