It is National Coming Out Day! Lately more than ever it has felt dangerous and scary to be authentically myself and out in education but I REFUSE to let hate and fear stop me... because then I have let my students down who need to know it is OK! That they are worthy of love, support and to live their true authentic lives no matter who they love!

I honestly dont think I have posted about this day since 2022 and that is sad... but no more! Like MLK, Jr. Said:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

Sharing this memory I wrote in 2022:

Today really was heavy on my mind. Sometimes it seems so easy to be out...to come out...to take that all for granted. I was reminded today to not take it for granted. It is NOT easy yet to come out and it is not always easy to be visibly out. (Especially in certain career fields) However like I've said before below... the youth today need it and they need to know it's OK! It gets better! There is hope!

"Today is National Coming Out Day. This is a day that gives me great joy and great pain. I think about my choice to be visible and out about who I am with my students. It was a scary leap to take but at the end of the day…what kind of mentor, role model and person would I be if I was not authentic and true to who I am. I am sure for many it is an issue but I naively believe for the majority it is not. What I do know is that it is important for me to be who I am and to walk in faith and trust in God’s Love and know that I could be that one that helps that kid who struggles like I did."

Happy National Coming Out Day! May we keep pushing toward the day when "coming out" as a way of assurance and acceptance is a thing of the past and we are free to just be who we are with all the love and acceptance is already a given! by @dashofculpepper

This year will be the 10th year of a Food Drive I established for my school community to support our community food bank: Piedmont Emergency Relief Center. I discovered this small community group because they reached out to our school asking for help. Every October we challenge our students to help collect non perishable food items for this small community resource. We collect all month and then encourage students to "Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat" on Halloween and ask for food items instead of just candy. I personally knew what food insecurity felt like as a kid. We want to fight that experience for kids and families in our school community. Please consider donating any non-perishable food items. I am willing to drive to you to pick it up. Help us make a difference going into the Holiday Season! Help is needed now more than ever! by @dashofculpepper

TRICK OR TREAT SO KIDS CAN EAT!

Ten years ago, I established our Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat food drive at Woodmont, and of all the projects I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of, this one will always be especially personal and close to my heart.

I grew up knowing what food insecurity felt like. I know what it means when there isn’t always enough, and I know how much a little help can mean to a family going through a difficult season.

So this year, as I get ready to turn the big 4-5, I have a birthday wish: I want to fill Bucky the Bronco with non-perishable food items!

Everything collected will be donated to the Piedmont Emergency Relief Center, which supports families right here in the Woodmont community and beyond.

Instead of making my 45th about getting something, I’d love to use it as an opportunity to GIVE something back—and hopefully make a real impact for our neighbors.

If you’d like to help me fill Bucky, send me a message! Every can, every box, every donation adds up.

Ten years of this project. 45 years of this life. One community taking care of each other.
