Shoji Hamada believed use mattered more than authorship. As a central figure of the Mingei movement, he rejected the idea of the artist as a solitary genius and instead elevated anonymous, functional objects made with care, repetition, and humility. His ceramics weren’t meant to be precious or rare. They were meant to be lived with.

His work argues that beauty emerges from restraint, material honesty, and quiet consistency. Clay, glaze, fire, time. No excess narrative. No need to explain itself. Just objects that work, endure, and gain meaning through use. by @dasswerke
