What Is Grief?

I am not okay.

I haven't been okay.

But I am trying.

I'm hurting. 💔
I'm sad.
I'm mad.
I'm grieving.

And sometimes I feel ungrateful simply because I'm hurting.

How can I love my life when people I love are gone?

How do I keep going so easily, then look back at what's missing and not feel down?

How do I pray and not wonder why you're gone?

To be an author in my biography, only to be reminded that I'm still just a character in it...

Because ain't no way, if I had the pen, you'd be written out of my story here.

They say don't question God.

But grief got me questioning existence.

Grief is a quiet observer.

Almost like a predator stalking its prey—and some days, here I am, a damn deer in headlights.

But I'm learning.

I'm learning to listen for the rustling of the leaves.

I'm learning that when I sit still long enough, my mind opens.

The hurt doesn't leave.

The love doesn't leave.

The missing doesn't leave.

But grief can't sneak-attack me as often—or hit quite as hard—when I've learned to recognize it coming.

So what is grief?

Grief is pain on the days you desperately want to tell somebody you love them...

and you can't.

Grief is love with no place to go.

It's all the things you still want to share with someone who isn't here to receive them.

It's the unresolved issues that are now just... sitting.

It's having one of the greatest accomplishments of your life, instinctively picking up your phone to call them—

and remembering they'll never answer again.

Grief sucks.

Grief is ass.

And grief is life.

Because as long as we have the privilege of living and loving, eventually we will have to grieve someone—or something—we once had.

Maybe that's part of the cost of loving deeply.

I don't have all the answers.

Today, I don't need to.

Today, I'm just trying.

And to my people who are somewhere in this same space:

I love you.

I understand.

And I pray for better days ahead.

Even in the darkness...

become the light.
