Don’t make the same mistake we did... Here are my top tips for driving in Italy!

1. Bring the right driver’s licence.
The primary driver needs to bring their physical driver’s license. A digital or international driver’s license won’t be accepted. 
2. Book directly with the rental company.
Changes cannot be made through a third party booking. 
3. Driving is easier than you think.
Roads are well maintained from Venice to Dolomites to Como

4. Take the toll roads.
Save 2hrs for only €10

5. Know the toll lane colours.
White = Cash or card
Blue = Card only
Yellow = Telepass only (don’t use this unless you have a Telepass device!)

6. Stay in the right lane. The left lane is only for overtaking

7. Watch out for ZTL zones. These are restricted traffic zones in many Italian cities. If you accidentally drive into one, you could receive a hefty fine.

8. Parking is colour-coded.
Blue = Paid parking
White = Free parking (where available)
Yellow = Reserved parking (don’t park here!)

9. Watch your speed. Heaps of speed cameras, especially in town. Motorway speed limits are typically 130 km/h.

A sandwich spot with a full deli counter?

Eric’s Deli in Albert Park makes everything fresh to order - Build your own or pick straight from the menu. Choose your bread - focaccia or ciabatta, and load it up.

We ordered:
- The Damage Toastie - grilled chicken, crispy bacon, basil pesto, tomato & mayo. Toasted to perfection (9/10)
- Schnitzel Classic Sandwich - lettuce, tomato, cheddar, red onion, avocado & mayo on focaccia. Fresh and light. (8.5/10)
- Mortadella Sandwich - stracciatella, basil pesto, pistachio & hot honey on focaccia. Just the right amount of sweetness (8.5/10)
- Parma Sandwich - chicken marinara, signature cheese & basil. On the heavier side, definitely one to share (8/10)

Found another spot doing table-side tiramisu in Melbourne… and they do table-side ricotta too??

Ronnie’s is a New York-inspired Italian diner tucked into the Rialto on Collins Street - moody, relaxed and the food is so good.

We ordered:
- Wagyu skewers - with bbq sauce & house made pickled cucumber
- Spicy Fusilli Alla Vodka - topped with house-whipped ricotta
- Gnocchi Bolognese - ricotta gnocchi, grandma’s pork, beef & veal bolognese
- Chicken Parmigiana - tomato, basil, mozzarella
- Crispy Chat Potatoes - chicken salt with chilli lime mayo
- Espresso Martini Tiramisu - served tableside

There’s just something about being served food right at your table.

Melbourne is really upping their game with specialty drinks.

Phined Coffee in North Melbourne is a small, cosy Vietnamese café and their Rice Coco Coffee is unlike anything I’ve tried. It’s a good sweet drink without a strong caffeine taste!

They also do toasties, bagels and sandwiches if you need a bite to go with it. I had the chicken pesto focaccia and it was not too heavy.

Ran for this, you should too.

Villa del Balbianello is one of the most iconic spots on Lake Como - filmed in Star Wars and Casino Royale. We managed to be the first ones there and had the entire loggia to ourselves, well for a brief moment. Just us, the arches, vines and lake. No crowds, no side characters to edit out.

I wasn’t the only one with this idea, there was an insane line not long after. Timing is everything so RUN!

Something about having it served right in front of you…

This spicy fusilli alla vodka was topped with whipped ricotta at the table! It was so creamy and cooked perfectly. Bit on the heavy side so make sure you come hungry!!

Late night café culture in Melbourne just got better
Amiri is an Asian fusion café open morning to night - Japanese, Korean and Mexican flavours all on one menu. Cosy, aesthetic and always busy.

We ordered:
Brunch
- Mexican Beef Queso Toastie (Combo with coffee) - toasted sourdough, pulled beef, jalapeño, chipotle mayo, melted cheese & red onion $17.90
- Salmon Bowl - pan seared salmon, teriyaki sauce, scrambled eggs, mustard, pickled radish & ginger on furikake rice $24.90
- Salmon Poke Yuzu Salad Bowl - sushi rice, yuzu yakiniku sauce, fresh salmon, seaweed, edamame, corn, avo, red onion & tobiko $21.90

Dessert
- Banoffee Pie $14.90
- Yuki Yuki Soft - matcha & Hokkaido milk soft serve with glass jelly, azuki paste, strawberries, milkshake ice cream, cornflakes & biscoff crumble $16.90

40 different sandwiches on handmade sourdough, starting from €6. We ordered the No. 14 - the bread was perfectly toasted and crunchy, filling was so creamy. Simple but so good.
