You knew her as Leah Angela Curry-Williams, the lead vocalist of the Mississippi Mass Choir. I knew her as Aunt Angie, the 15-year-old who welcomed a third nephew from her big sister, Dorcus Curry Thigpen.

As long as I’ve known her, she was an anointed singer. And I don’t use that adjective lightly. She would transform a room every time she sang. I saw it early on, but in 1988, the world got to see it when she recorded “Near the Cross” alongside Frank Williams with the Mississippi Mass Choir.

She gave the best hugs and always told me she loved me whenever we were together. A memory that stands out from a few years ago is when she made me get rid of my fake earrings and gave me my first real diamonds. Not sure why, but that was a special moment. It’s like she wanted to see the best version of me, and that one gesture elevated my thinking about what I should accept for myself.

The memory I will NEVER forget is the night before she transitioned.

She had a planned trip to Turks & Caicos and wanted to come visit us here in ATL before her flight Friday. I picked her up Tuesday night and brought her to my house to stay for what I thought would be a few days.

On the way to my house, we talked about everything: from making sure my mom was good, to her being weirded out by the self-driving cars in Atlanta, to how much she appreciated Aunt Emma for being there for her while dealing with minor health challenges.

We got home. I grabbed her bags and took them inside. I gave her some towels, and she said, “I was meaning to bring you some white towels because Rachel told me you loved all white towels.”
She was right. Towels are like toilet paper. I need to see what’s happening. You don’t have black toilet paper, do you? No, you don’t. 😂 But I digress.

We said goodnight to each other, and I went upstairs to go to bed.

I didn’t know that would be the last time I’d see her, and that in about 12 hours, her trip would detour to a place where she didn’t need her bags.

I will miss her dearly. But the reunion that is happening in Heaven right now is epic. She’s good. We’re not that good, but we will be okay.
We will see her again.

🕊️ Today, the Mississippi Mass Choir family is mourning the loss of one of our own.

Leah Curry, an original founding member and beloved lead singer of the Mississippi Mass Choir (Near the Cross, Yes, etc) has transitioned from this life. Leah was not only a powerful voice, but a treasured sister, friend, and part of the foundation upon which this ministry was built.

As the sister of David and Dorcus Curry, Leah’s impact reaches far beyond the songs she sang. Her voice, her presence, and the memories she created with this choir will forever remain a part of the Mississippi Mass Choir story.

We are grateful for the gift of Leah’s life, her ministry, and the legacy she leaves behind. While our hearts are heavy, we hold close the promise that her labor was not in vain.

Please keep the entire Curry family, the Mississippi Mass Choir family, her friends, and everyone who loved Leah lifted in prayer during this difficult time.

Rest well, Leah. Your voice may be silent here, but your song will continue to live through all of us.
