When you grow up gifted around people who aren’t ready for it, you learn to apologize for existing at full volume.

You tiptoe. You downplay your wins. You shrink just so your regular steps don’t feel like an attack on someone else’s roof.

Be kind. Be courteous. But stop apologizing for the fact that your floor is someone else’s ceiling.

Dolores

We showed up for work today—
Hoy como siempre—
The way nuestra gente
Have always done—pre dawn—
Pa ver si alguien tiene jale—

Cafecitos y cigarillos
Stubbed out beneath botas viejas
Every time somebody shouted
“Ocupo uno más”—
Piling into trocas sucias
With strangers—dangers
Outweighed by need
And purpose—bills to pay—
Mouths to feed.

We showed up for work today,
Con martillos, sierras,
Brochas y plumas,
To do the dirty decent task
The truth asked for—
The chore of justified erasure.

We were tired and heavy hearted
Before the work even started,
Pero lo hizimos bien—honestamente—
Porque sin justicia no hay paz
And even when it hurts
Le echamos ganas.

We took down signs,
Alzados por nuestros padres—
Painted over murals pintados
Sobre muros con orgullo—
Drawing lines through a name—
Once famed, loved, admired—
Turned tóxico overnight.

We did it because it was right.

To show you what to do.
Pa que sepan—so you know—
If it can be done for him
It can be done for less.
Y Cuando dejan de ser cobardes,
Pues—tal vez, we’ll help you
