Canada is making a major geopolitical move.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is opening discussions with the European Union about a “unique alliance,” a potential new relationship that could dramatically deepen Canada’s ties with Europe.

It is pertinent to note that the timing is hard to ignore. As Canada faces increasing uncertainty in its relationship with the United States, Ottawa is looking toward Europe for new opportunities.

The discussions could include:

- Closer access to European markets 🇨🇦🇪🇺
- Canadian energy exports to Europe
- AI and technology partnerships
- Defence and strategic industries
- Data centres and cloud infrastructure
- Undersea cables and critical infrastructure

There is another interesting possibility worth watching. Canada could potentially explore a form of EU “associate membership” or an exceptionally close partnership, rather than becoming a full member of the European Union.

That distinction is important. Canada could maintain its full national sovereignty and independence, while gaining deeper economic, technological and strategic connections with the EU.

For Canadians, such a relationship could mean "greater access to European markets, more investment opportunities, stronger technology partnerships, new export destinations and potentially more opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers."

For Europeans, closer ties with Canada could mean: greater access to Canadian energy and natural resources, investment, technology, innovation and a stable G7 partner across the Atlantic.

In practical terms, Canada would not become the next EU member. Instead, Ottawa could be exploring a new model of close association that allows Canada to work more closely with the European bloc without becoming part of it.

If this goes ahead, it could mark one of the biggest shifts in Canada’s international economic strategy in decades.

The message from Ottawa appears clear: Canada is looking to diversify its partnerships and reduce its dependence on any single market. Globally, everyone knows, this is bigger than trade...

Maybe Canada’s greatest chapter hasn’t been written yet.

For too long, we’ve wondered what happens when the U.S. changes the rules, raises the stakes, or puts its own interests first. But what if the answer isn’t fear?

Canada’s future is bigger than any one border. We are all conversant of the fact that "change comes with a price." So, building a stronger, more independent Canada won’t happen overnight, and there will be difficult moments along the way

Prime Minister Mark Carney is right about one thing: building a stronger, more independent economy won’t come without challenges but better days are ahead. Mark Carney’s message is clear: Canada can’t afford to put all our economic eggs in one basket. We need to build stronger at home, open more doors around the world, and create opportunities for Canadian workers, farmers, entrepreneurs, businesses and families.

The work is already underway, with Canada pursuing new trade and strategic partnerships across the globe. Canada has the people. We have the resources. We have the talent and the ingenuity. We are reliable. We now need the confidence to build. We need the capability to strengthen our economy at home and building new partnerships around the world.

Don't get me wrong, this isn’t about turning our backs on the United States. It’s about making sure Canada has options.

It’s about standing on our own two feet while still working with our neighbours and friends.

The road ahead may be difficult, but difficult doesn’t mean impossible.
It actully means we have work to do.

To be candid, if we get this right, the Canada we leave for our children could be stronger, more resilient and more confident than the Canada we inherited.

Let me reiterate that our best days don’t have to be behind us. They can be ahead of us.

Canada Fights Back: $7.5 Billion to Protect Canadian Jobs.

A strong response for Canadian workers and businesses to cushion the effect of U.S tariffs.

When Canada faces a 50% U.S. tariff on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods, the answer can’t be to sit back and hope for the best.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government is taking action.

The federal government has announced $7.5 billion in new and enhanced support to help Canadian workers and businesses deal with the impact of these tariffs.

This builds on nearly $25 billion in tariff-related support already put in place over the past 18 months.

That means support for workers who may be affected, businesses facing pressure, and communities that depend on Canadian industries staying strong.

This isn’t about pretending tariffs don’t hurt. They do.

It’s about making sure Canadian workers and Canadian businesses aren’t left to face the consequences alone.

Protecting Canadian jobs. Supporting Canadian businesses. Strengthening our economy.

These are difficult times, but Canada has faced difficult moments before and we’ve come through them by standing together and making smart, strategic decisions.

I believe the Carney government is right to put Canadian workers and businesses first.

"Canada has what the whole world wants."

I decided to do more research when when Prime Minister Mark Carney uttered the above statement on August 22, 2026.
When people talk about Canada’s strength in the current trade dispute with the United States, they usually talk about oil, critical minerals, agriculture, lumber, or the Canadian dollar. But there’s another advantage that doesn’t get nearly enough attention: The Arctic.

America can impose tariffs. Canada can build capacity. America can try to put economic pressure on Canada.
Canada can invest in infrastructure that opens new possibilities. We are capable.

If Trump's strategy is to pressure Canada into submission with tariffs, maybe he should remember one thing: Canada isn't just America's northern neighbour. Canada is an Arctic power.

Canada already has one of the world’s largest icebreaker fleets, and today, Ottawa announced more than C$11 billion for six new icebreakers to be built in Quebec. The most interesting fact that deserves more attention is that Canada has roughly 18 icebreakers second largest in the whole world after Russia, while the United States has 3 operational polar icebreakers.
Canada has enormous natural resources, critical minerals, energy, freshwater, farmland and an Arctic position that is becoming increasingly important to global trade and security.
The announcement of building more icebreakers means Canada can strengthen its ability to develop and defend those northern economic opportunities independently. The U.S. is now scrambling to expand its own icebreaking fleet, while Canada is already operating far more icebreakers and investing billions more in the capability. (Definition of small but mighty)

You may be wondering why does that matter in a trade war? Icebreakers are essential for keeping shipping routes open, supporting northern communities, conducting scientific research, protecting our Arctic sovereignty, and enabling economic activity. Big news for Canada 🇨🇦 and Nigeria 🇳🇬!

The Government of Canada has announced an expanded Air Transport Agreement with Nigeria, paving the way for direct flights between the two countries for the first time.

“By expanding our air transport agreements, we are creating new opportunities for Canadian airlines and giving travellers more choice. The newly expanded Canada-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement will strengthen our economic ties, support tourism and trade, and making it easier for people and businesses in both countries to connect.”

One of the highlights of my friend Ramon Alimi Ramon Canada–Mexico visit was an unforgettable stop at the iconic CN Tower / Tour CN in downtown Toronto.
What made the day even more memorable wasn't just the breathtaking view, it was the people he met. Ramon had the privilege of exchanging a few words with Canada's Finance Minister, who graciously introduced him to the Prime Minister of Croatia. A simple, warm interaction that left a lasting impression.
What stood out most was how accessible public leaders can be. Seeing elected officials freely interacting with people in such a relaxed setting is a reminder that leadership can also be about openness, humility, and connecting with citizens.
Every country has its own way of doing things, but experiences like this inspire conversations about the kind of public service and leadership that builds trust and brings leaders closer to the people they serve.
