Hello to all my new followers! I wanted to take a moment to re-introduce myself. I am Felicity, founder of Daughters of Gaea, an ethical and sustainable home decor brand, launched in 2022. When I was thinking about building my brand, it was at a time in my life when I was suffering from chronic Lyme disease and needed to focus my energy on something positive to get through a difficult chapter. I had spent my career up to that point working for “ethical” investment funds. My takeaway from my time deep diving into “sustainable” businesses was that they were not really ethical at all. Some of the bigger brands, who claimed to be doing everything right, producing long sustainability reports each year, were then outed in the media for greenwashing and had a history of using slave labour and toxic materials with a huge amount of waste. I watched whilst some brands in fashion started a new legacy – building their own independent businesses, with ethics and sustainability woven into each decision from the beginning. As I had not yet seen this done in the home space, I wanted to champion this way of building a business. My products are made by female-led artisan groups who have a positive social impact for their workers. 95% of hand workers around the world are women, and supporting these artisan groups means that women are being provided with safe and fair working environments. Handcraft also means small batch production, so there is minimum waste and also very low amounts of electricity used in the production process. To take things a step further, I offset my carbon footprint each month, donate 1% of revenues (not profits) to @1percentftp and plant a tree with each order through @treesisters_official. All my packaging is recyclable and made from natural and recycled materials. I hope to show you a new collection soon, working with a different hand craft technique – embroidery - from talented female-led artisans in Mexico. An interview with Bhanu. Bhanu is a block printer and colour mixer at Bangalore’s @tharanginistudio. It is the city's oldesst + female-led block printing studio. Block printing is an intricate process done purley by hand, adding colours in rhythmic patterns layer by layer onto fabrics. . Our first collection pays homage to an Indian garden with block printed florals printed onto ethical mulberry silk and organic cotton. . We think these traditional handcraft techniques should be celebrated and kept alive, passed down through generations. . Tharangini studios pays living wage to all employees and provides benefits such as maternity pay and safe and flexible working environments. They also work with people with autism through the Asha foundation for those in need of employment. .
