Arch. Augusto Romano
Cassetta per macchina da scrivere, 1947.

The typewriter storage cabinet is a piece of furniture designed by the architect Augusto Romano, presented at the 8th Milan Triennale in 1947 and manufactured by Castelli.
Romano, a staunch modernist, was no stranger to designs that met practical needs: the previous year, at the ‘Il mobile Standard’ exhibition at the Pro Cultura Femminile in Turin, he had presented, for example, a practical telephone directory cabinet that allowed users to take notes and store both the printed directory and a personal diary.
In this case, it is a particularly elegant piece of furniture in wood and glass, capable of displaying its contents even when closed.
At the time, the typewriter was an object that was making the transition from offices into homes as a true status symbol.
Hence the need to protect it from dust, but also to showcase what was still, at the time, a marvel of technology and, above all, to have a functional and compact workstation in a very small space.
Two models were produced: one for the Olivetti Studio 42 by Figini and Pollini, and another, slightly smaller one, for the Olivetti MP1 by Aldo and Adriano Magnelli, also known as the ICO.
Mounted on the wall, it becomes a veritable frame that highlights these masterpieces of industrial design.
The small piece of furniture was awarded the bronze medal at the Triennale; a period photograph of it forms part of the current exhibition at the Triennale Design Museum, though unfortunately the designer is not credited.

Questa mattina al museo del design della Triennale ho visto questa foto del geniale mobiletto-custodia per macchina da scrivere disegnato da Augusto Romano nel 1947 e premiato con la medaglia di bronzo all'ottava Triennale. Purtroppo non era indicato il nome dell'autore, per cui rendo giustizia.
Pubblicato su Domus 230 del 1948 a pag. 40 e su Aloi Esempi di arredamento moderno di tutto il mondo. Studi librerie e scrivanie, Hoepli 1953, pag.252-254.
