The bank holiday weekend has been productive: a display unit for my ever growing collection of @rducklocomotiveworks kits.

With the completion of the Flying Scot, a minor issue arose; namely I didn't have a shelf bigger enough 😂 A couple of sheets of plywood and several dozen screws solved this issue as well as providing a somewhat safer location for the Lego B5 Omega Class Destroyer.

Quite by accident however I seemed to have made it rather too large... guess I'll have to find some way of filling the remaining spaces... 😂 by @dave85f

A little side project for the festive season: converting an old Ikea shelving unit into a small compost bin, just in time for all the Christmas peelings. by @dave85f

Been wanting to share this for a while, but although I completed it in January it's taken a while for it to get to it's intended recipient. After being rejected by Irish Custom, I ended up hand delivering it several months later while on holiday.

The pen case itself is made from oak, Walnut Burr veneer and Brass with a magnetic catch. The inlayed sailing boat is Maple for the hull and Oak for the sails. The interior is cork and velvet.

As always whenever I complete a project there's a list of things I would do differently and that I feel I could have done better, but one aspect I'm oddly proud of is the hinges. The only hinges I could find small enough were very poor quality, so I ended up making them myself. Although a very simple process, it was surprisingly satisfying.

I do love this Walnut Burr veneer; once you've secured it properly, it just cleans up so beautifully and looks amazing. by @dave85f

When your Christmas already isn't going well and 2020 decides to add insult to injury 🤦‍♂️.

What do you do when the cistern lever breaks, it's Christmas Day & you're in Tier 4? Just grab a spare piece of timber and bodge a replacement 😂 by @dave85f

Spent the last couple of days working on this little model stepladder. When I first came across this design (a modified Hatherley Lattice) it really appealed to both the engineer and the mathematician in me. The geometry which allows the design to unfold and hold open even without the stops is elegant in it's simplicity. I will be building a full sized version at some point, now that I've built this prototype and I know it works as is should.

Also first time working with Mahogany, absolutely lovely wood, though it did go through my sandpaper very quickly 😂😂 by @dave85f

A quick little weekend project. A shop down the road from was selling a whole bunch of rusty old tools and bits for a pound each. One impulse purchase later... Bought the hand scythe, just because it's cool, but the garden shears will be useful for my mum, who often has to use a saw when gardening 😂. A quick clean, a liberal amount of WD40, a light sanding and a generous application of oil later and voila, not too bad for a couple quid and a few hours of elbow grease. by @dave85f

Been experimenting with veneers recently in preparation for a forthcoming project. Applying the veneer was straightforward, the finish not so much. The French Polish was easy to apply, but surprisingly lacklustre. The varnish on the other hand, right pain to apply, but has a lovely gloss finish which really works with the gorgeous Walnut Burr veneer.

Both finishes seem to be rather easy to damage, the marks on two of the pieces are from a cup of tea just sitting on them. May need to find a tougher varnish before continuing. by @dave85f
