Great to be invited to speak @rhswisley ‘s Flavours of Autumn at Hilltop Live today and even better as my old friends @_sean_hogan and Preston @arcto_mountain are visiting @yazhobbs and I for a few days. So Sean joined in with my talk on unusual edible plants. @artur_cisar_erlach - coauthor of #ediblethebook joined us via his entertaining and informative videos from the Vienna woods Austria and the wild windswept shores of Nova Scotia Canada. We then enjoyed a tour of the gardens by @dave_blackwell__ Thanks to Jonathan Newell and the Hilltop Live team for organising such a great event. @hortulus_plants by @dave_blackwell__
Convovulus cneorum that I picked up at @evergreen_exterior_services a few weeks ago. Doing very nicely so far. by @dave_blackwell__
A wonderful addition from @chloequeenofspades on Seven Acres at @rhswisley; Anemone hupehensis 'Ariel'. Kniphofia 'Happy Halloween' is just starting to flower behind. Good stuff 👌 by @dave_blackwell__
Flowering dogwood are having a phenomenal year. This unnamed C. kousa var. chinensis on the south side of Battleston is the best I've seen it. Otherworldly amongst the Rhodies and Magnolia. It's so good to see that part of the garden hydrated!!! by @dave_blackwell__
@chloequeenofspades wonderful Tulip display set off by Cercis 'Shirobana' The tulips are 'Candy Prince' 'Mistress Mystic' 'Ronaldo' 'Paul Scherer' 'Night Club' and 'Red Rover'. by @dave_blackwell__
The most beautiful emerging foliage of Tilia henryana 'Kerdalo'. Amazing it's still standing, after being run over by a fat child last year (see second picture) we lashed it back together in the hope it would graft and it did! Hurrah! by @dave_blackwell__
Peaonia cambessedesii not only beautiful but fun to say! I picked this up at Hever Castle plant fair the other week and have been watching it's solitary flower bud open up over the last few days. The glaucous foliage combined with that pink is just *chefs kiss*. Scented too! by @dave_blackwell__
Recent highlights 1) Cardamine pratensis growing on the banks of the canal near Ripley 2) Agapetes 'Scarlet Elf' I thought named for the colour of the flower but perhaps not. 3) Staphylea holocarpa 'Rosea' in the Dukes Garden at Kew 4) Yucca queretaroensis multi stemmed at Kew, so cool! 5) Interesting form of Scilla peruviana that I'm not familiar with but was everywhere on the Kew rock garden. 6) Tulips! Backed by the iconic Conifer Lawn and the cloud pruned Cotoneaster and Osmanthus. by @dave_blackwell__
Rh. pachysanthum, Aucuba himalaica var. dolichophylla and Enkianthus perulatus underplanted with Oxalis 'Bob Hazldine' by @dave_blackwell__
The Alpine house was absolutely resplendent the other night, a testament to the team @rhswisley. It also seems Feb 25 is the Bowes-Lyon Rose Garden solstice. by @dave_blackwell__
Putting roots on Stewartia malacodendron has made me an absurdly happy little gardener. Air layering is a brilliant method for those plants that don't seem to want to root, and is very low effort. Set and forget and a year or so later you have a pretty decent size plant with a bit of luck! Deciduous Azalea in the second pic. And my rooted 'cutting' in the the third. by @dave_blackwell__
A sea of 'February Gold' backed by the architectural Osmanthus makes for quite a cheery sight! Props to @gabigabigoo @nealelouisa for the pruning and probably @peter_roger_thomas_jones for the job lot of daffs! by @dave_blackwell__
