Eddie was first. Then Haru. Now Ezequiel.

If Eddie is the one still chasing, and Haru is the one who stopped — Ezequiel is the one who remembers. He’s the guy who holds the whole thing together and never asks for credit for it.

Everybody calls him Cheque. He’s had the same hands his whole life — worked cars since he was a kid, lowriders mostly, the old ones nobody else knows how to fix anymore. But that’s not really who he is. The cars pay the rent. Something else kept him alive.

His old man had the bottle. Cheque had the anger that comes with that, the kind that usually turns into something ugly. It didn’t. Because when he was fifteen and full of it, he found a board and four guys who’d become the only family that ever really stuck. That’s not a metaphor to him. Skating is the reason he’s still here. He’ll tell you that flat, like he’s telling you the time.

He’s the warmest one in the whole crew, which surprises people, because he looks like he’d take your head off. That gap — the hard face and the soft heart under it — that’s Cheque. He feeds everybody. He shows up. He remembers who brought who around, even when everyone else forgot.

Especially who brought Roxy around.

Eddie was the first. Haru is next.

If Eddie is the one still moving — still chasing something he can’t quite name — then Haru is the one who seems like he stopped chasing.

Not because he gave up. Because somewhere along the way, he found a different way to live with it.

Of all the guys in this crew, Haru seems the most at peace with how things turned out. And I’ve been thinking about why that is. Because his life wasn’t easier. He didn’t get more. He just — at some point — stopped measuring his life against someone else’s and started measuring it against itself.

That’s harder than it sounds. Most of us never get there.

Haru’s story is about what it looks like when you build something small and real and yours — and you show up to it every single day.

Watch him. Listen to what he doesn’t say.

Because the guys who seem most at peace are usually the ones who went through the most to get there.

If you’ve been following along for a while, you might have noticed I’ve been quietly working on something. Different kind of project. Something I actually care about.

It’s called One Last Drop.

It started with one character — Eddie. An old skateboarder from Los Angeles. Early sixties, still showing up, still carrying that board like it’s the only thing that ever made sense to him. I spent a long time trying to figure out who he is, how he talks, what he carries. This is the first real look at him. Consider this his prologue. A way to meet him before the story starts.

But Eddie isn’t alone. One Last Drop is really about a group. A crew of older men who all started together — same streets, same boards, same nothing to lose. Kids from the same place, the same time. And then life happened. And life doesn’t happen equally to everyone.

That’s the thing I keep coming back to. It’s not about talent. It’s never just about talent. Some people end up recognized, successful, seen — and it has as much to do with being in the right place at the right time as anything they did. And the guy standing right next to them, just as good, just as hungry — he goes home, gets a job, disappears into a regular life. And nobody makes a documentary about him. Nobody puts him on a cover.
But he’s still there. Still carrying it. Still showing up at fifty, sixty years old with the same feeling in his chest he had at fifteen.

That’s what this is about. Not fame. Not skating, even. It’s about that question that sits quiet in the back of everyone’s life — why him and not me? Why then and not now? — and how you keep going anyway. How you find meaning in a life that the world didn’t decide to celebrate.

These characters are all carrying something different. And over the coming weeks or months I’ll be introducing them one by one. Where they ended up. What they think about when it gets quiet.
Eddie is first. Watch him. Listen to what he says on that hill. Because he’s not just talking about skating.

Naia, one of my favorite characters, found a new friend. 🐈

Still working on One Last Drop Part 3, but I thought it would be fun to test OpenArt Director in the meantime and give Naia a little moment of her own.

With an existing character sheet, location sheet, and a short idea, the process was pretty straightforward. I changed the final edit here and there, but overall it was really fun to use.
