While in Pennsylvania, I stopped by one of my favorite auto museums, the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum (@SimeoneMuseum), to visit a couple of my favorite Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwings with my #MBCAfamily!

Thank you to the entire team who welcomed us, spent time with us, and brought the silver SL 300 to center stage so we could get a close-up look at everything!

For all the details:

See that little RENNtech badge on the decklid?

That’s where this stops being a very nice SL600 and starts becoming some proper old school Mercedes nonsense.

The R230 was peak ā€œengineering budget is not a concernā€ Mercedes. Active Body Control running on high pressure hydraulics. Brake by wire. Enough control modules to run a small NATO exercise.

And in the SL600, the M275: 5.5 liters, two turbos, twelve cylinders and twenty four spark plugs—because…German Engineers.

Stock, it made 493 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. And that torque was basically waiting for you at 1,800 rpm. No screaming toward redline. No theatrical wait for the powerband. Touch the throttle and the horizon just starts coming toward you.

This one makes ~600 horsepower.

That puts it right on the doorstep of the SL65 AMG, except it keeps the quieter SL600 badge and looks like something a very successful dentist would drive to brunch.

And for those who don’t know…RENNtech isn’t some eBay badge operation. Founder Hartmut Feyhl spent 12 years at AMG Germany before serving as AMG North America’s technical director. RENNtech was born from that pre merger AMG world…when fast Mercedes were still being created by actual lunatics in small rooms.

Is the R230 complicated? Christ, yes. A folding hardtop, hydraulic suspension, brake by wire, two turbos and 24 spark plugs have all the ingredients for a service invoice capable of altering a marriage.

Twenty five thousand original miles on a W210 isn’t an odometer reading. It’s a clerical error.

Right-hand drive, Azurite Blue Metallic over gray leather and now wearing a Florida plate because retirement should involve palm trees.

When the W210 arrived in 1995, it had the nearly impossible job of replacing the beloved W124. Mercedes abandoned the familiar square face for four elliptical headlights, achieved a slippery 0.27 drag coefficient and packed the new E-Class with more than 30 technical innovations.

It looked radical for approximately ten minutes. Then it became the face of Mercedes Benz.

Under the hood is the M111: a 2.3-liter, 16 valve inline four producing 150 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels through an automatic transmission.

Zero to 60 happens…eventually.

But speed was never the assignment. This was executive transportation engineered to cross countries without drama, carry four adults in complete comfort and quietly accumulate enormous mileage.

Which makes this one rather ridiculous.

The Elegance trim brought additional chrome, a richer cabin and just enough formality to suggest its original owner may have referred to the trunk as ā€œthe boot.ā€ This example adds AMG-stamped Monoblocks, yellow inner lamps, Parktronic, a sunroof and gray leather that appears to have been only lightly introduced to human beings.

Mercedes built 109,527 E230 sedans between 1995 and 1998. They weren’t treated as collector cars. They were motorway commuters, family cars, executive transport and airport workhorses. Most were driven deep into six figures, traded down, used harder and eventually disappeared.

That’s why ~25,000 original miles matters.

This isn’t a restored memory of a W210. It’s one that never really aged.

Not an E55. Not a homologation special. Not fast enough to rearrange any internal organs.

Just a beautifully preserved example of the era when even an ordinary E-Class felt like a serious piece of industrial equipment.

I spy some monoblocks! Mercedes-AMG has offered these on the G 63 (what this is) since 2023. After the mid-cycle refresh in 2025, there was also an additional monoblock-style wheel available for the G 550, but it was not as great as this design! taken in Mandarin, Jacksonville by @dave_mbca

You don't see this pairing every day. Seen in my 'hood, ha, a Rezvani Hercules 6x6 and an S 63 Coupe. The Rezvani, a military-inspired six-wheel drive "God of all trucks". Built in Irvine, California, starts at $259,000 for the base model, while the fully armored Military Edition — featuring B7-rated ballistic armor, explosive device detection, and a 1,300-horsepower supercharged V-8 — can cost upwards of $1.5 million. Oh, and the last of the big body S-Class coupes, an S 63. 🤣 taken in Mandarin, Jacksonville by @dave_mbca

• 25 tickets — $1,000 (save $250)

Winner also receives complimentary entry to any @AMGexperienceUS On Track Performance event, valued at $1,995.

The 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT 55 represents a ground-up rethinking of the modern sports car, built entirely in Germany. Its incredibly rigid aluminum spaceframe body structure is optimized for safety, sharp handling, and grand touring comfort, while the long hood conceals a handcrafted 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo engine assembled by a single master technician — a tradition that defines the AMG philosophy.

Standard active rear-axle steering delivers exceptional agility through tight corners while maintaining absolute stability at highway speeds.

The optional RENNtech upgrades take this already extraordinary machine to a rare enthusiast level. With a custom ECU software tune, modified blow-off valves, and a precision-engineered exhaust, output climbs to nearly 600 horsepower — an exceptional configuration that represents the pinnacle of modern performance.

Was gifted a copy of The Star from the Mercedes Benz Club of America, and I got to see some of my Amelia weekend photography in actual, physical, hold-it-in-your-hands print.

That never gets old.

Big thank you to @dave_mbca, @mbcasouthernstars, and the people who keep giving me the chance to document these events. @ameliaconcoursofficial is obviously full of incredible cars, but the real story is always the people, the history, and the community wrapped around them.

Very grateful to have a small part in telling that story.
