I was so happy some of my favorite people (and linguists) got to meet: Rachel Schaffer, Deborah Schaffer, and Rosalia Badhorse! Through a foundation set up by their father, Rachel and Deb awarded Rosalia a $10,000 grant to create children's books written in Cheyenne; the project is called, Nevo’ėstanehevema, Collective Books. Rosalia is a linguist and Cheyenne language instructor at Chief Dull Knife College. She is also the vice-president of The Bridge Foundation. Rosalia has successfully written and implemented several grant projects with The Bridge Foundation over the years. We are hoping that this grant is just the beginning of the Nevo’ėstanehevema project, and that it will create many books and reading/writing material in the Cheyenne language in the future.
If you would like to donate to Nevo’ėstanehevema project, you can use the PayPal QR code provided. Or if you feel more comfortable with another method, message me. This is a great way for you to support a project in your community. We will be able to prove the success of the project by presenting the finished copy of the book.
I can provide you documentation to use to write your donation off for your taxes. The Bridge Foundation is a Montana Incorporated 501 (c)(3).

Very sorry to share that my upcoming presentations for Humanities Montana have been cancelled, due to Humanities Montana's funding from the NEH (National Endowment for Humanities) being cut by DOGE. I loved presenting for Humanities Montana, as a presenter for both Speakers in Schools and Montana Conversations programs. When I met with the fantastic director at HM, John Knight, to craft my presentation, he told me that the primary goal was to create presentations that connected Montanas, created common ground across our state. My experiences at libraries across Montana were wonderful, from Browning to Miles City: We had great conversations about connections, community, friendship, and love. A shout out to the amazing librarians at small towns across Montana–you are the center of community in your towns. Keep it up!
Even sadder is that just last week, my foundation, The Bridge Foundation, in partnership with Cheyenne linguist Rosalia Badhorse, submitted a grant to Humanities Montana to create a Cheyenne language children's book. This grant funding is cancelled, too. This makes me particularly sad. I was excited to work with Cheyenne linguists, language speakers, and artists to create this book. Most importantly, in my 30-plus years working with Native youth in Montana, I've come to strongly believe that the most effective way to help Native youth live their best lives is to connect them to their culture and language. They are healthiest mentally and physically when they are grounded and connected to their culture. But we won't give up. We have other grant submissions out there. It's too important to quit.
My thoughts are with John Knight and the other Humanities Montana staff who will lose their jobs when funding runs out in June. You did good work. I was impressed and grateful. You made Montana a better place.

Books: Reading the West in Fall 2024

David Joseph Charpentier crafts a mosaic of the life of a young Cheyenne boy named Maurice Prairie Chief in The Boy Who Promised Me Horses (University of Nebraska). He offers a picture of life on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in southeastern Montana, where he met Prairie Chief and has worked as an English teacher at St. Labre Indian School. As he awkwardly begins to fit in with the local culture — testing out phrases like “skoden” (“let’s go then”) and the ubiquitous “ennit?” (“isn’t it?”), attending an all-night peyote ceremony, and learning the ins and outs of unrelenting, though good-natured, teasing — Charpentier slowly discovers that Ashland, Montana may be the home he will always come back to. As much a personal quest to find himself as a haunting portrait of Prairie Chief’s too-short life — in all its joy and tragedy, pain and hope, freedom and sorrow — The Boy Who Promised Me Horses is a testament to the power of friendship and the ability of a chance encounter to change a life forever.

The Boy Who Promised Me Horses has been nominated for the Reading the West Book Book Award! It's currently part of the "longlist" with sixteen other memoirs, but I'll take it. (Have to share this now before it maybe doesn't make the short list.) Honored to be on the same page with these other authors. The Boy Who Promised You Horses will give you a different perspective reading about the West than you've read before.
