I was very fortunate to be invited by my wonderful friends at @insideaoa to the opening of Dolly Parton’s new “LIFE OF MANY COLORS” museum in Nashville.⁣
⁣
Kudos to all of my talented colleagues whose incredible work here honors Dolly’s life through immersive environments, a massive amount of beautifully integrated media, seemingly endless costumes, and gorgeous artifact exhibitry.⁣
⁣
Best of all, the entire experience is narrated and hosted by Dolly herself, in moments of storytelling that are alternately hilarious, charming and deeply moving. It feels less like walking through a museum than spending a few hours in her company, as she tells you the story of her life in her own words.⁣
⁣
And then there’s the finale: a “virtual performance” in a small, intimate theater, built around a short greatest-hits medley and the final live performance Dolly ever recorded. There was not a dry eye in the house.⁣
⁣
The whole thing feels like an extraordinary gift Dolly left behind: joyful, colorful, generous, deeply personal, and lovingly created by some of the very best people in the experience design business.⁣
⁣
Dolly always said, “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” This team understood exactly who she was, and filled every corner of this place with that same purpose, color and joy. I think she would be very proud. ⁣

The first time we saw @robynkonichiwa was at an acoustic in-store performance at Borders Books in Hollywood in 2009 (swipe to see), and there was maybe 50-75 people in attendance. We’ve seen her live five times since then at increasingly larger venues with far bigger crowds. Seeing her sold-out show at @thekiaforum tonight was incredible — incredibly artful lighting and production, and crazy energy from both her and the crowd. Seeing her break down and cry happy tears when the entire audience scream-sang the chorus of “Dancing On My Own” acapella was a full-circle moment that brought me to tears, too. taken in Kia Forum by @davecobb

Happy 39th birthday to this extraordinary human, who wandered into my orbit a little over a year ago and changed our lives in ways I never could have expected.⁣
⁣
Luke, you’ve brought so much joy and adventure into my life, and a kind of happiness that people close to me have told me they haven’t seen in a very long time.⁣
⁣
I’m incredibly grateful for you and Matt, and for this strange and wonderful thing we’re all creating together.⁣
⁣
I told you when you woke up today that I want to celebrate the rest of your birthdays together.⁣
⁣

The junk hauler just left. $350 later, the garage at our San Diego condo is finally empty.⁣
⁣
Piled high from front to back until this morning, none of Mom’s remaining stuff had any real value, monetary or emotional, to me. In fact, a lot of it was tied to a period of my life and a family relationship that carried some very bad memories. This wasn’t a case of struggling to let go of treasured belongings. I wanted it gone.⁣
⁣
For more than a year we’ve tried Facebook Marketplace, garage sales, even offering things for free. This weekend’s five-hour garage sale brought in maybe $40 from assorted trinkets. I knew eventually I was probably going to have to pay someone to haul the rest away. I just didn’t expect it to cost quite this much, financially or emotionally.⁣
⁣
The condo itself has already moved on. My friend Mike lives there now, and it brings me a lot of peace to know that new, happy memories are being made in a place that once held some very difficult ones.⁣
⁣
But this last pile of old furniture and knick-knacks in the garage remained. Literal and figurative deadweight.⁣
⁣
That’s been one of the stranger parts of grief for me: not grief over losing my mother, but the long administrative and emotional afterlife of everything that came with her. The sorting, the selling, the storing, the decisions, the expenses. The cleanup after a difficult relationship is over. And, after being a caretaker for so long, the much harder work of reinvesting in myself, my life, and the relationships that matter to me.⁣
⁣
I thought cleaning out the condo in 2024 was the end of that chapter. Apparently there were still a few pages left.⁣
⁣

A few weeks ago, I was proud and honored to attend the 85th anniversary of Boy Scout Troop 18 here in North Hollywood, where I was a scout from 1979 to 1988.⁣
⁣
Scouting is absolutely foundational to who I am as a person — the amazing things I got to experience, the challenges I faced, and the values I learned are still a part of me to this day. ⁣
⁣
I’m also super proud to say that Troop 18 was one of the first to enthusiastically bring girls into the program in 2019, and they have already had a number of female Eagle Scouts.⁣
