Four-Colour Cobblestone Panels

These panels can be used to tile a wall or other surface. Each colour set is printed separately, allowing the project to be completed on a single colour printer.

This project was printed with @yxpolyer “Pastel PLA” series on my @lulzbot3d printers.

This project began as a design challenge to program a model using a “Four Colour Algorithm.” In mathematics, the four-colour theorem states that no more than four colors are required to color the regions of any “map” so that no two adjacent regions have the same color.

This project was particularly complex because in order to tile a 2D surface, the edges of each panel “loop” over to the opposite edge when calculating colour assignments of neighboring cells. This means that the four-colour algorithm used to assign colours was run on a torus graph of the cells that were then projected to the flat 2D tile.

Mizu Gumi Picture Stands

This collection of 8 picture stands uses a Japanese woodworking technique to connect the two sides, eliminate the need for glue.

First-time assembly is a bit like a puzzle, but it’s easy once you figure out the trick!

This style of joinery is also known as “Nejire Kumi Tsugi” or “Twisted Box Joint box joint”. It is celebrated for interlocking two pieces of wood at an angle using a complex, diagonal, interlocking mechanism that securely locks without glue or fasteners.

The pieces are joined by sliding them together along a diagonal axis. This unique assembly is what allows the joint to resist pulling and twisting forces.

Bouali Strange Attractor Abstract Sculpture

Strange attractors are hidden mathematical patterns that show up in systems that seem completely chaotic, like the weather, market behaviour or water flowing in a river.

They are represented by a system of three differential equations that describe how a particle would move if “dropped” into the system.

This abstract sculpture traces the path of a particle “dropped” into the Bouali Attractor system.
