I didn’t expect the 70-200 to become such a frequently used lens when I got it.

I originally bought it to fill in a gap in my focal lengths, but it ended up not coming off my camera much. I’ve shot everything from landscapes to details with it, and it works wonders for portraits.

There’s something about the way it compresses a scene that makes ordinary moments feel more intentional. Sometimes zooming with your feet is about stepping backwards to tell the story better.

“I want to take a picture in a place that’s hard to get to.”

That’s the idea that started everything. Once the idea came to me, it took a couple weeks to research and then a night to book the hotel. 7 weeks of training later and I was looking up at Bierstadt wondering if this photographer from Nebraska was in over his head.

It wore me out but I got the picture I set out to get. I also got so many more along the way. My favorite isn’t even from the summit.

This journey ended up being far more impactful to me than I thought it would be. It was fun documenting something like this for the first time, I’ve found a new interest in alpine hiking and I learned a few things about myself these past several weeks.

Most of all I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to do things like this. Thanks, Mt. Bierstadt.

This lens is truly thee workhorse. It’s hardly ever off my camera and there’s not a whole lot of need for it to be.

If there’s a piece of glass I wish I had gotten sooner, it is this one. Just makes me appreciate it a little bit more now that it’s in hand.

I’m super stoked to see the images this lens helps capture in the future.

“Framed Windmill”

My goal was to photograph Midwest windmills. I really wanted to avoid the standard shot across a corn field. This is what I found and it’s a great example of framing and perspective.

“Peak Patrol”

Taken at the top of Mt. Bierstadt. First off, who doesn’t like mountain goats? The pairing and similar head position between the two really made this shot for me.

“The Long Way Home”

This was after the bison left the road way. Everyone drove away thinking that he just was gone. I was glad that I stuck around to get out of my car and get these shots of him heading away. I see this as a nice example of a leading line and scale.

“The Outcasts”

I really enjoyed the separation between the 3 in focus cranes and those in the back. Does make it seem like they’ve got a different goal than the rest. The background cranes also made for a bit of a frame.

“Break Time”

This includes a nice subject as well as some motion blur. It’s one of those images that tells a great story of the carnival experience. taken in Almost Perfect by @david.imgs

Busy bees and butterflies 🐝🦋

Not a subject matter I usually shoot but it’s always fun to challenge yourself. After seeing how these turned out I’m certainly interested in trying out more insect photography.

Maybe a new macro lense will be in my future. 👀

The Badlands 🏞️

This National Park is truly a hidden gem. I remember being so surprised to see this wild land just tucked into the Sandhills. It really can feel like you’re on another planet when looking out at these buttes.

This is the closest NP to where I live so I’m looking forward to photographing it more over the coming years.

My take on the Lunar Eclipse 🌒

Could have definitely used a longer lens for this but I had just found out it was happening 😅

Motion, motion, motion. 💫

Motion brings a photo to life. As someone who has leaned more towards landscape photography, this is a technique I’ve not dabbled much with (blurry landscapes don’t look too hot). But, to be a well rounded photographer it’s an important skill to learn.
