𝐀𝐕𝐑𝐞𝐐 invites you to attend a PhD Performance titled 𝐁𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐀: 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔, by 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐭, in collaboration with 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐢 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐤𝐨, 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐥𝐟𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐥, and 𝐋𝐢𝐚𝐦 𝐉𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐡𝐚.

Developed as the artistic component of Alida's doctoral research jointly housed at 𝐀𝐕𝐑𝐞𝐐 and the 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 at 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐛𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐡 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, this investigation-assemblage-exploration thinks through questions such as: In what ways have we held our tongues? When have we looked away? What guilt do we carry for our silence and inaction? What are the possibilities for bearing witness now, alone and together, having confronted the ways in which we have failed to bear witness before?

A long overdue look back a wonderfully inspiring time at Concertgebouw Brugge as a guest curator in Spring 2025 with our collective Mulch-imédia!

LET US COOK - the performance & installation programme as part of Concertgebouw Brugge’s Spring Soundings Festival - was the outcome of our participation in Sounds Now’s “Curating Diversity” residency. Convened by Esther Ursem (Musica Impulsecenteum) and lead by meLê yamomo and Irene Radwell, this glorious residency has us engage in inspiriting and challenging conversations about music, sound art, curation, programming, collaboration, institutions, power, memory, joy, and community across Belgium - in Brugge, Pelt, Leuven, the OORtreders Festival, the Transit Festival, and the Sounds Now Symposium.

Returning to the Brugge Concertgebouw in March 2025 to present LET US COOK - a curated program featuring commissions, collaborations, and reenactments from the amazing Hye Young Sin, Emine Bostancı, Pepe Dayaw, Devon Gayes & Koen Gijsman - alongside CgB’s incredible team (Valentina Broes and Jonas de Roover in particular!) was just the cherry on top!

Thank you all for this luscious and deeply formative time together!

Seeing this year’s graduation posts come by has made me nostalgic - so I’m hopping on the train.
This time last year I graduated with a Master of Music (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University 🎓🤩

My thesis [which is now published and available in open access via SunScholar] is titled “Violent Aesthetics in Marlene Van Niekerk’s ‘Die Kortstondige Raklewe van Anastasia W!’”

My journey with Anastasia W goes all the way back to 2015 [see slides 19-20 for a jumpscare of David in highschool & playing clarinet]. What Marlene, Marthinus, Braam, Gertjie, Colin and the whole team on stage captured all the way back in 2010 with this production has (and continues to hold) an immeasurable power that has moved me deeply.

Captured here are some bits and bobs from the production whose explosive impact on audiences, the artists involved, and South African theatre in general remains undeniable. More importantly, it holds the children it mourns in power and dignity. You can also see some of the desks I wrote the thesis on.

Thank you to everyone who assisted and supported me in bringing this study to the page. If you ever want to speak (or weep) about this work - you know where to find me.

Memories backstage at Romeo Castelluci and Raphaël Pichon’s Le Lacrime di Eros.

A dream project in many ways: cars on stage, Monteverdi, the outrageous Ensemble Pygmalion, Jeanine de Bique, a ballet of Psd-T70 CE industrial robotic ride-on floor cleaners, t*rture, Harry the snake 🐍, cars on stage (!!!) - and my little brother was there to see his first opera too.

We have programmed👂🏼 a mixture of amazing artists and musicians starting the day with @hye.young.sin performing with her new adapted work 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 - 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴 at 15:30 followed by @emine_bostanci performance 𝘈 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘐𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘣𝘶𝘭 at 16:30 and to end the event a performance by @pepedayaw @nowherekitchen with @koengsmn & @devongatesmusic for a cooking performance 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥: 𝘐𝘯𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘙𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 at 16:45 ! 🔉🔉🔉

“Let Us Cook was born as an educational initiative of SoundsNow – a big five-year European project dedicated to promoting contemporary, experimental music and sound art, by focusing on the social and artistic role of the curator. Between 2019 and 2024, the project established a network of 9 music festivals and art centres across Europe, and presented an array of performances, workshops, mentorship programs, and hands-on curatorial labs with established and upcoming scholars, artists, and curators. The final SoundsNow project was hosted in October 2024 by Musica Impulse Centre (BE) in collaboration with Concertgebouw Brugge. During the intensive 1-week course led by meLê yamomo and Irene Revell, five aspiring curators between 22 and 27 years old engaged in workshops and discussions centred on the theme of curating diversity.”

Working with @philipmillermusic is always a joy and this time was no different 🤩

It was a pleasure to do the engraving and some orchestration for the uShaka Ilembe Suite - written by Philip Miller with Tshegofatso Moeng and the incredible Mbuso Khoza - performed live for the first time by the Mzanzi Philharmonic Orchestra during their 2024 national tour “Rhythms of Hope.”

The program was performed in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town during November and December with soloists Mbuso Khoza and Ann Masina, and was conducted by Kirill Karabits. taken in Cape Town City Hall by @david_e_wolf
