Extract from the critical text written by @vvvikingaaa

"Fayek’s work reveals how spatial control is not incidental but deeply
embedded in the fabric of cities, passed down through generations as an invisible architecture of power. Bodies navigate urban landscapes shaped by policies of restriction and surveillance, where movement is not just about geography but about access, privilege, and exclusion. The ability to move freely (or to be obstructed) becomes a measure of systemic control, dictating who belongs and who is kept at the margins.
At REA Fair 2025, Fayek presents Inner Mental Space (2025), an interrogation of colonial photography and its lasting imprint on the way indigenous and exploited communities are represented. Drawing from Ella Shohat and Robert Stam’s critique of the "camera gun" - the way photography was weaponized by colonial powers - Fayek exposes how these visual technologies were not just tools of documentation, but of domination. The colonial gaze, fixed through the lens, turned landscapes and people into specimens, reinforcing pseudo-scientific biases that still resonate today."

David Michel Fayek’s @david_mfayek work explores the intersection of bodies, control, and movement within urban landscapes. Through photography, installations, and archival material, he investigates
how architecture, surveillance, and mass psychology shape our interactions with space.
For #reafair2025, Fayek presents Inner Mental Space (2025), a critical examination of colonial
photography and its ongoing influence on the representation of marginalized communities. Drawing on the concept of the “camera gun,” Fayek exposes how colonial powers used photography not just to document, but to dominate and control, shaping perceptions of the
“other.” By recontextualizing these historical materials, he challenges us to confront how these
systems of control still permeate our present, from urban planning to social exclusion.

marginalizzate.
all’esclusione sociale.

… Elke discipline is welkom!

🇬🇧 The winning artworks from the Zomersalon 2024 have now been on view in the public spaces of Amsterdam Zuidoost for almost a year. The theme that year was TIME, and as is the yearly tradition, visitors were given the chance to vote for their favourite works.

In 2025, the focus was on Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, and from early July, the winning artworks from 2025 will once again be on display for a year in the outdoor spaces of Amsterdam Zuidoost.

This year’s theme is UTOPIA, and here’s some good news: entries for the 2026 Zomersalon will open shortly. So, are you an artist (whether you’re just starting out, a professional or an amateur) and do you have a great piece of work that fits this theme? Then now is your chance! … All disciplines are welcome!

April/May End of residency restitution 🇪🇬

Presenting the ongoing research on the concept of Enframing and the impact of Gustave Le Bon "Psychologie de la foule" on the Egyptian Elites and on urban modernization of Egypt in early 1900'.
I finally came up with two pieces which I called 'Amulets'. They stand for gathering of materials I would normally use for producing new artworks as they retain the same spiritual energy as an artwork would, but in a seed-like state.

Egyptian cotton, tinted glass, Egyptian tea-toned print, archival photos film negative on calc paper, drawing on cotton fabric
