2016 is hard to put into words. In 2012, I lost everything in Hurricane Sandy. I was homeless for three months, couch-surfing wherever friends would take me, and came close to leaving New York altogether.

Before that, I had already lost a different future. I was injured in Marine Corps boot camp, and with that injury, my military dreams ended before they could begin. Like many veterans, I had to confront the sudden loss of identity—the feeling that the life you prepared for is no longer available to you.

Then Chelsea Stemple gave me her apartment. It became my home for the next 13 years. That single act of generosity gave me the stability to rebuild, not just a career, but myself.

By 2016, years of discipline, grit, and persistence—traits forged long before photography—had finally compounded. I was shooting for Calvin Klein, Kate Spade, and Marc Jacobs, and I directed a commercial for Conair. I was traveling constantly, working in Hawaii, Los Angeles, and New York. I spent five weeks in Europe—London, Stockholm, Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin—renting a motorcycle in each city and producing a massive body of personal work. That journey became a documentary titled Euro Trip, which went on to screen at a film festival and premiere in ten theaters across France.
