POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I knew Lee, and admired her. I go to the Rambles two to three times a week to bird watch and, for years, always stopped by her tent to say hello and chat. Recently she showed me exquisite small tinfoil sculptures she shaped of squirrels in a variety of poses. They were extraordinary, she kept them in small, clear plastic boxes. Her health had deteriorated but she always found a bright smile to share with me. She lived in a hand mended tent that zipped shut. She told me that one day she was going to build a wooden shelter in the north woods. I imagined her as a brave sailor in a small sail boat living with only the most essential necessities, navigating in a tumbling sea, somehow maneuvering soundlessly in the roar of a storm. I will miss her, and cherish my memories of her.

“Francis Lee Rogers painted birds in the park, her home for decades. She was found dead on Sunday, beaten and stabbed, shaking a community of friends and collectors of her art.”
