Sometimes the smaller thing usurps the big one in particularly here at dawn before the majestic appearance of the sun into the already day lit sky of the glorious morning. We all know this is also known as sunrise because it also rises into the sky like the predawn light it gives unconditionally to our fair world so that life may happen. Thank you. The sun also rises. Im happy to have my life and be alive everyday to see the light upon my path the the sun gives to me. As much as I love the sun it’s light and all things beginning middle and end to each day alive because the world happens during those times I find myself having a real penchant for the world when things are not happening. When it’s late at night or early in the morning.. the quiet.. the darkness…the endlessness.The solitude. The natural light and beauty of the stars or moon are sometimes equaled by the artificial light of man… depending on the right setting. Of so many wonderful things about The Eternal City one in particular I became quite taken with was the broken streetlights of Rome. There are and were so many in the summer and fall of 2023 but this one. This light. Just outside of The Vatican just down the street from St Peter’s a hop skip and a jump away from where I spent nights not in the streets in a place of Via Candia that I’ve learned to love and hate. Hate is a big word my mom always said and I try to only love, but if I were to hate then I would hate to see this light ever be anything but broken upon my return. If it’s fixed that’s fine to but sometimes broken is better. Someone i loved once always told me their was beauty in the break down. She was right, but at the same time so wrong.. I don’t feel wrong about this. This little broken light of mine. by @davidadamkelly

St Thomas by Sonny Rollins. I love this tune dearly and was lucky enough to play it this summer on the shores of The Tiber in Rome. Though nobody does it better and I was certainly more lucky to cross paths with one of the best to ever do it in my teens. Stanton Moore is just as inspiring today as the first time I saw him play 25 years ago during Mardi Gras of 1999. I have learned so much in the 22 years we’ve worked together but still have so much more to learn from this wonderful man. I am thankful for what he has meant in my life and will always take these three things he exemplifies more so than any of so many great traits he has as the foundation for greatness and character… work dedication, discipline. Natural talent can only take you so far which he undoubtedly has but he is always striving to be better. As we all should be in life be it working or playing or just plain living. by @davidadamkelly

Monday nights for years early in my lfe meant standing on Oak Street outside the stage door of the 🍁 listening to Papa Grows funk and hangin and leaning from Russel Batiste Jr.. RIP.. what a loss this year and for me it was a big part of my life Mondays at the leaf. Stanton did for him what j do for Stanton and after 22 years it’s nights like this here at The Columns Hotel on the avenue and music like this in this setting that make Mondays again magical. by @davidadamkelly
