I am revisiting old songs. Part of understanding the new me. Reimagining familiar strains. Some that have been ringing in my head in echos and orchestrations for 30 years. Iā€™m finding fresh meaning in found epitaphs and missive mantras. šŸŽ¶As a writer, Iā€™ve come to find, the lyrics I pen are more than a just champions of a song, they are guiding light to understanding a life creative. šŸŽØ This one, written with Scott Bilstad and Mitch Getz, never made it to print. But I can tell you you the manic punch of a Tiny Tim meets Oysterhead kind of anthem we performed in our band Katzenjammer, is completely stripped down here, bare to the bones demo in a natural light. Whatā€™s the lesson? My mentor Scott Gilly once told me ā€œyou can go back home David.ā€ And I think what he meant, through the lens of creative parallels, we donā€™t have to leave ourselves behind, as we soldier through for relevance and meaning in the modern maze and corporate chase. We can walk back home. Look back to move forward. We rolled in with a band of brothers, drummer, guitars, bassistā€”as a small fraction of the 44 bands that were the culmination of the @lotteryleague 2026 phenomenon.What an amazing coming together of musicians from all backgrounds and all persuasions. Part 1: Taking Back the GardenWell, itā€™s Menā€™s Mental Health Awareness Month. And Iā€™d like to dedicate this little series to all the men of my life, in my creative circle, in my family and friend groups ā€” doing the heavy lifting. And finding ways to get the most out of life, even in times of struggle.This is a little about getting back to me. And also paying tribute to my father and grandfather, who instilled a love for the earth, organic gardening, like good dirt beneath my fingernails. A love that will never leave me. Sure, this ground may have gone fallow for a time. But even the earth needs time to rest, heal, and provide in other ways. And while I was digging out of some real compound grief, the garden was a reminder, even in loss there is light. It bloomed in so many shades of white and gold each year. Never asking for permission. And beneath it all, an entire crop of black eyed susans spread and flourished.Itā€™s true, every day is a new beginning. And itā€™s important to always remember men, thereā€™s someone here for you. Always here to lend an ear. Offer a hand. Remind you just how bright your light shines. Nowā€¦ I need to get to digging, turning the soil, and planting these maters, peppers, squash, and green beans. But one last reminder to remember this ā€” you can always wander back to those people, and those pursuits you love. How did I love trains as a kid growing up in Chardon? We had the Chelsea system that would come through right across Main Street and I never mind itā€™d be stuck at that crossing and watching those trains go by. Itā€™s what got me interested in model trains in my first HO set that I had set up from the time I got it to the time we sold it.Iā€™d hope to get out today but I couldnā€™t get away from the desk so itā€™s amazing to see these drone aerial shots. This little electric piano called my name, after the @mossomcle show at @buffaloironworks. Lately Iā€™ve been drawn to writing and dreaming on the keys. Different melodies and moods grab me and like they say, rewire my brain.This one sounds so throw back compared to more formal tension on my studio upright at home. I imagine sweeping strings, deep sustained bass, and aching guitar wrestling with themes of loss and recovery.
