David Sadie sarebbe probabilmente diventato un rugbysta di valore se un infortunio non ne avesse troncato la carriera quando era ancora giovanissimo (e in verità lo è ancora). E noi non staremmo scrivendo questa storia; perché, abbandonato giocoforza il progetto dello sport professionistico, David si è concentrato sull’altra sua passione, per nostra fortuna la viticoltura. Tra i banchi dell’Università di Stellenbosch ha conosciuto Nadia, l’ha sposata, e ha avviato con lei il progetto di cui qui facciamo cenno. Nel 2014 ha rilevato la conduzione di una piccola azienda nel paradiso naturale dello Swartland (all’estremo sudovest del Sud Africa), e Nadia, agronoma, lo ha raggiunto due anni dopo. Il regime viticolturale che i due hanno adottato ha previsto la messa al bando totale di erbicidi e antiparassitari di sintesi, l’inerbimento totale delle vigne, la conversione al biologico. E altrettanto genuino e spontaneo è lo stile dei vini, che sono freschi, fruttati, mentolati, lievi, definiti, estroversi; il fatto che alcun portino nomi che sanno di Grecia e di Mediterraneo è già una piccola dichiarazione di intenti, una suggestione di arcaica, morbida solarità che trova nel bicchiere un riflesso puntuale quanto sorprendente. by @davidandnadia

Swartland Steen Stok by Paaltjie (in progress) it is for the first white pick of the 2025 season just before the heat takes more of the vintage. Nature provides, nature takes, all in one season, yet are we grateful for a a beautiful vintage on hand. Old vines dry-land farmed it is, low yields it will be, come heatwave, come more heatwaves, this is our region’s reality and it’s true colours….from extreme wet to extreme dry all in a year’s farming and making!

Recap of an amazing insight on 8 years of Hoë-Steen •• for this occassion we took David to a place he knows: @wturbankitchen • it’s the a-typical heights of the vine that gives it his name: ‘High-Chenin’. A S/SW exposure with clay over limestone marked by the red colour because of iron. Approximately 4 metres deep and holds water well. Planted in 1968 • 22: is already quite open, showing some reduction, almonds and saltiness, soft, fresh and generous • 21: will need it’s time, it was shy and though revealed great potential, great acidity and smokey • 20: shows warmth, richness and grip at the same time, combined with great depth, needs a lot of air • 19: rich and bold and reminds of the northern rhône in a way, this is for now • 18: is spicy with a rich character, is in a great window now, some fennel and ripe apricots • 17: relatively young! Tense and exciting, pure, deep and bright • 16: again a rhône type of style because of the development, bold, ripe, deep with ginger spice • 15: type of high-end loire white, impressive, oily, rich in fruit, depth, elegance, length it’s all there! •• thanks to everbody who showed up and WT for opening up, big hug to David who made it possible and to Nadia for lending him out to us 🫶🏼 • #davidandnadia #swartlandwine #swartlandindependent #oldvineproject #wosa #winetasting #sommelier by @davidandnadia
