@david_hartt produced a beautiful and haunting project entitled Peripheries that is now on view in @metamericanwing Vanderlyn panorama room. The description of the show is below, and the rapturous experience continues to prove that Hartt is one of the smartest artists working today. It’s also an inspired collaboration between departments at The Met; an invitation by Sylvia Yount, head of the American Wing, led to @janepanetta and @destineefilmore brilliantly curating this project ⚡️

David Hartt (Canadian, born 1967) transforms John Vanderlyn’s immersive historical painting, Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles (1818–19), into a dynamic contemporary installation, offering viewers the opportunity to explore questions of place and perspective. Vanderlyn’s highly detailed rendering of Versailles—among the largest surviving panoramas in the United States—is activated by Hartt’s architectural intervention, bringing past and present into conversation.

For this site-specific commission—consisting of two Direct View LED screens and echoing imagery from the panorama itself—Hartt draws on direct documentation of Versailles, the cinematic language of French New Wave Cinema, and photographs of the palace grounds by Eugene Atget to reshape the experience of The Met’s circular gallery space housing the work. Filmed at locations from Versailles to the Boulevard Périphérique and throughout the center of Paris, Peripheries explores the constant reinvention of the French capital. Hartt’s installation reconfigures movement and angles of vision, augmented through an original score by composer and musician Jeff Parker. Visitors are visually lured away from established centers within the city toward the margins—or the “peripheries”—where alternative perspectives and histories are often relegated. By engaging directly with Vanderlyn’s panorama, Hartt has created a space to reconsider not only the historical painting itself but also examine ideas of representation and cultural memory within a living environment. @metmuseum taken in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York by @davidcbreslin

I’ve been waiting my whole life in art to do this show.

Coming to The Met in June 2027, dispersed across galleries and departments throughout @metmuseum, my co-curator @anndgoldstein and I make the case that FGT’s essential work about love, loss, history, and place is an art for his, our, and all time. Felix Gonzalez-Torres made a history-changing body of work that never chose between the personal and the political, the piercingly direct and the generously enigmatic. The AIDS crisis was the crucible that forged his resolute conceptual clarity, and his brilliance was creating an open-ended body of work where new meanings can be embedded into historical ones. This exhibition is an opportunity to bring new critical attention to an artist whose full complexity is still being understood. Presenting it at The Met, spanning the Museum and departments, Gonzalez-Torres’s work gives us the opportunity to witness what binds humanity across time and what fixes each of us in our present.

I’m very grateful to all of my Met colleagues who were open to this cross-department experiment ⚡️

Big thanks to @andrearosengallery and @felixgonzaleztorres.foundation for their collaboration (and more to come!). The Art Institute will be doing a separate but simultaneous show, curated by @paulinapobocha, and we’ll share a catalogue.

Heartfelt congratulations and thanks to @liuweistudio for creating a mesmerizing series of sculptures for the facade @metmuseum ⚡️ Their beauty, to me, lies in maintaining that precariousness where you’re not really sure if they’re falling apart or coming together. He called the entire project “a bridge,” and I think part of that is keeping the balance and connection between places, ideas, moods, and ideologies that might otherwise remain apart. In short, these are sculptural embodiments of hope. More congratulations to the incredible Lesley Ma, curator @metmodern, who selected Liu Wei and worked closely with him on this project.

A momentous occasion at The Met, the groundbreaking for the Tang Wing for Modern and Contemporary Art. First image is of the leaders and visionaries who propelled us to this day @fridaescobedo @max.hollein and Board co-chairs Tony James and Candace Beinecke; the second is WHY we’re building this wing, some of the incredible artists who give the museum a reason to be @aujourdhuirose @jcjstudio @lornasimpson and a photo bombing @hallchase; the third image is of the brilliant team designing this gorgeous and sensitive (and monumental) undertaking; and the last are the incredible philanthropists and dreamers, Oscar Tang and Agnes Hsu-Tang, who pushed this project into being… I’m happy to be in the same picture. @metmuseum @metmodern by @davidcbreslin

I got to visit one of my favorite humans today at the place that has been his anchor since 1954. If Monet had Giverny and Cezanne had Aix-en-Provence, Katz has Lincolnville. It’s a place that has also become an idea, of tiger lilies that stand for brief but endless summers, friends who visit and never leave, a house that is stage set and home, retreats that are renewals, cycles that are singularities. The man himself is also his dualities: the tender swaggerer, the plainspoken intellectual, the past-loving anti-sentimentalist, the future-oriented evangelist, the painter among poets. I reminded Alex of and thanked him for all the conversations we’ve had over the years about painting. He gently corrected me: it’s one conversation. To more of it. #alexkatz

Big thanks to the brothers Katz, Isaac and Oliver, for their hospitality and charming company. by @davidcbreslin

“Grace, what do you think this painting is about?”

“Dad, today painters do not have to go to a subject matter outside of themselves. Most modern painters work from a different source. They work from within.”

I hope all the Krasner and Pollock books around the apartment don’t count as brainwashing.

One of the most beautiful artworks I know is now on view in one of the most beautiful exhibitions I’ve seen. Danh Vo turned the galleries of the @stedelijkmuseum into an open scaffolding of objects, artifacts, feelings, and histories. The sculpture I love starts with a 16th century Spanish sculpture of Christ that Vo let weather outside. He then cast the sculpture and made a copy in bronze. The bronze hands he placed on Christ’s body are those of own father. He (Jesus? Phung Vo? Both?) holds glass vases bearing fresh nasturtiums that the museum replaces when they fade. As in much of Vo’s work, beauty, spirituality, distance, violence, and longing—the frenetic both/ands of being alive—share a singular form. I think of my own my father when I see those hands and the flowers that spill out from them—a dear lost life still somehow gripping my passing present. If you’re anywhere near Amsterdam, go! It’s an unmissable show. Huge congrats, dear Danh and @clrvnls ❤️ #danhvo taken in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam by @davidcbreslin

I didn’t expect to be as affected as I was by seeing Klee’s Angelus Novus @thejewishmuseum. You read about a thing for over half of your life and see it reproduced to death, and you’d think the aura would be sucked dry. Given how stupidly mediated everything is, I was (and I think a lot of us are) desperate for something authentic. You can’t really tell from reproduction how Klee treated the edges of the paper as if they were singed, as if smoke licks the room around it. I never noticed the little hook the angel has for a heart and a peach room in his chest looking for something to hold. And I’m not usually obsessed by provenance, but the fact that Walter Benjamin cobbled together what little money he had in 1921 because he loved it so much and had to have it… come on! There’s no irony here that aura somehow returns; it’s the beautiful and peculiar admixture of poetry and history. You get disaster and, once in a while, you get art ❤️❤️❤️ #paulklee #angelofhistory by @davidcbreslin
