Some recent work:
As well as continuing the specular paintings, I have been making scraping/averaged paintings “inspired” by thinking of how Ai works making something out of a multitude.

Started by making self portraits painting 8- 9 versions of the same side my face on top of each and then sanding back to find/create some mixed “averaged” image. Images at the end.

Then I did the same thing with a vase of Flowers which as they slowly wither and fade beautifully mark time.

here are all the first flower paintings in a video at the end the result.. with some details.

The world feels like there are two realities that are opposites of each other but obviously related.

I made this drawing in the last few days of December but these works seem just as relevant today. Hang in there.

Copies and originals born at the same time that have to coexist.

Turns out I will be here both days ..

The condition of the world today is the conceptual and material underpinning of his new series of paintings at Platform Project Space.
Each work consists of two canvases which are made together, untouched by any tools except for the paint and canvas. Foregoing brushes and in a sense even his own hands, Cantoni presses the canvases together and smears layers of paint between them, spreading it on both sides at the same time, the paintings almost make themselves. As reflected copies of each other, the two resulting canvases are one and the same but also their own opposite. Though separate, they are both simultaneously “originals” and copies of one another, mirrored counterparts, together become the complete work.
Unlike the Rorschach test, where the high contrast inkblot is meant to solicit repressed subconscious expression, Cantoni’s paintings do not reflect the singularity of the individual viewer. They project our current social, cultural sphere, built in relationship to abstraction, gesture and color field painting. They read as diffuse pictorial environments, stereo-metric spaces rather than figures or objects.
Each pair is an invitation to spatial access to a kind of doubled place, a doubled reality. The viewer is located between the image and its mirrored reflection, never really knowing which is which.
These paintings offer teasing, wry, very twenty-first century versions of stubborn questions about authenticity and originality.

One of my recent specular paintings (number 012) has some very nice company! Hanging in between a Gustav Klimt and Paul Klee and right next to @jonathanpeyser ( in the shadow of!)

the exhibiton @platformprojectspace is open until the 30th of september.

about the paintings:
There are at least two versions of everything and no-one knows what is real.

Each work consists of two canvases which are made together, using no painting tools except for paint and the canvases themselves.

A reflected copy of each other, they are one and the same but also their own opposite.

They are “almost” self made - immaculately (untouched by any tools) generated reflections of each other.

In the making, layers accumulate, on both canvases, over and over each other, and both grow to be similar but not exact copies.

They are each others counterpart and together become the complete work.

Each work can be rotated and re-positioned as long as they still exhibit their self reflection aspect.

Futile to decide which is the original and which is the reflection. Both, are simultaneously the original.
