We are thrilled to announce the release of our new photo book 🫶

Romanzo Meticcio by Davide Degano @davidedegano

How can contemporary Italian identity be defined? Romanzo Meticcio examines the post-colonial condition of Italy as a fundamental element of contemporary life in the Bel Paese.
In Davide Degano’s research, the prefix “post” takes on a progressive historical value. The project establishes a link between the present, the colonial past, and the intranational and international waves of migration, inviting a critical attitude towards the imperialist and fascist legacies of the past and a careful analysis of their impact on contemporary society.
Romanzo Meticcio aims to bring this past to light. It creates new imaginaries and cultural scenarios for the future by questioning Italian identity at its core.
This project was selected by Artphilein Editions to be awarded with the publication of this photobook as special prize within the Liquida Photofestival 2024 contest @liquidaphotofestival.

The book is already available at a special early bird price on our website 🍀

We’re delighted to have Davide Degano as our next Guest Takeover @davidedegano

Davide Degano (b. 1990) is an Italian visual artist whose practice examines how images participate in the construction of memory, identity and collective imagination. Moving between photography, archival research, moving image and installation, he approaches the photographic image not as neutral evidence, but as a site of tension between what is made visible and what remains absent.

Born in Sicily and raised in Friuli Venezia Giulia, with Colombian and Slovenian family backgrounds, Degano often begins from personal histories to address broader questions of belonging, migration, nationalism and the construction of dominant historical narratives. Borderlands, both geographical and symbolic, recur throughout his work as spaces in which identities and histories remain fluid and contested.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Fotografia Europea, Festival Circulation(s), Encontros da Imagem and the Biennale Rencontres Photographiques de Guyane. His books include Sclavanie and Romanzo Meticcio, published by Penisola Edizioni in 2021 and Artphilein Editions in 2024. Image from series Romanzo Meticcio by @davidedegano

[Meet the artist!]

Iako projekt istražuje područja između Italije i slavenskih teritorija, fotografije obrađuju teme duboko povezane s poviješću Istre: kulturne transformacije, promjene suvereniteta, sjećanja zajednica i trajnost identiteta.

Projekt istražuje slavensko-furlanske korijene planinskih pograničnih zajednica, jezičnu složenost te procese iseljavanja i depopulacije, nudeći promišljanje o očuvanju kolektivnog sjećanja i vrijednosti života u zajednici.

Im extremely happy to share that my new body of work, Jack Walker’s Scrapbook has been awarded the Italian Council grant and will be developed together with @foam_amsterdam
I’m beyond grateful to everyone who believed in this project long before it became what it is today. @jenny_smets , thank you for giving me the confidence to apply in the first place—I genuinely don’t think I would have done it without your support. Jilke Golbachand everyone at Foam, thank you for trusting and supporting a project that was (and still is) very much a work in progress. Femke and Fotodok (project partner), thank you for your constant encouragement over the years—I never take it for granted. Dana Lixenberg, thank you for your generosity, your interest, and your continued support. And Davide Valeri, thank you for not only believing in Romanzo Meticcio, but also for immediately trusting me with the Leone Jacovacci archive. That trust made this project possible. I can’t wait to share what’s coming next. by @davidedegano

LA CAPSULA DEL TEMPO
30 fotografi raccontano la bellezza italiana

a cura dei photoeditor di d

@DavideDegano
Friuli-Venezia Giulia

✨ Meeting(s) with Davide Degano

Throughout the festival, discover the 24 projects presented this year at Circulation(s) through the artists’ voices. This is an opportunity to explore their worlds in greater detail and learn more about their works and creative approaches.

«What seemed to me at the beginning a private silence, revealed itself as a part of a broader and historical repression». Davide Degano explains how his series « Do-li-na » explores the connections between images, memory and identity in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a region where Italian, Slovenian, Friulian and German cultures meet. The rediscovery of the artist’s grandmother’s history, her Slovenian heritage having been concealed by fascist italianisation politics, led him to question how images and archives determine what is passed on or erased.

🗓️ The exhibitions are open Wednesday to Sunday from 2 pm to 7 pm, through May 17

I’m pleased to share that I have been awarded a commission by the Amsterdam City Archives @stadsarchief (Stadsarchief Amsterdam).

This opportunity will allow me to develop an ongoing project on sound system culture in Amsterdam, focusing on the people, spaces, and structures that sustain it — from sound system builders and technicians to dancers and community members who shape the scene beyond its most visible forms.

Working within the framework of the archive, the project aims to reflect on what remains unseen or underrepresented, and how contemporary practices can enter and expand institutional memory.

I’m grateful to the City Archives and the selection panel formed by @coknol @lisannevanhappen @jenny_smets and @sophietates for their trust and support, and I’m looking forward to developing this work over the coming months.

More soon…
