What an incredible and dramatic chase! This composite captures the progression of the August 12, 2026, total solar eclipse as seen from the Balearic Islands. Because totality occurred so close to sunset here in Ibiza, the atmosphere played a massive role in the visual sequence, shifting the colors dramatically as the sun sank lower on the horizon.

As you can see in the early partial phases (upper left), passing clouds threatened the view but ultimately acted as a natural filter, adding a moody, painterly texture to the crescent sun. Fortunately, the sky cleared just in time for the main event.

During totality in the center, a spectacular and massive solar prominence is clearly visible on the upper-left limb, piercing through the inner corona. As the eclipse concluded and the sun approached the horizon (lower right), the atmospheric scattering bathed the final partial phases in a deep, fiery red.

Image Details:

Composition: Time-lapse composite tracking the sun’s path from upper left to lower right.
Key Features: Passing high clouds during ingress, a massive solar prominence during totality, and atmospheric reddening during egress due to the low solar altitude.
Acquisition & Processing Notes

(Note: You can fill in your specific gear and exposure settings here before posting to AstroBin)

Telescope/Lens: Sigma 150-600mm
Camera: Nikon D750 (didn’t want to risk the Z sensor, first time using solar filter!)
Mount: Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer]
Filter: Baader AstroSolar
Location: Ibiza, Spain (August 12, 2026)
Processing: Aligned and composited in Photoshop. The partial phases were exposed to preserve the solar disk, while the totality shot was a blend of bracketed exposures to capture both the brilliant prominence and the delicate coronal streamers.
Clear skies!
