Streaming Museum, now in its 18th year, continues to explore the power of the arts to bring people to feel the visible and invisible interconnected energies of the world, & historic continuity.

Artist Ryoji Ikeda is a visionary communicator of these energies, which we highlight with an excerpt from our video of his “test pattern [times square]” & his conversation with Barbara London on her podcast “Barbara London Calling”. They discuss his life influences & work with sound in its raw state — sine tones and noise — often in frequencies at the edge of human perception.

“I’ve collected everything from NASA or CERN, particle physics, quantum mechanics. I have an incredibly enormous data set… The question is how to use it… It has to be beautiful or aesthetically striking, even ugly or whatever. It’s just material, like color is for a painter… I’m a composer who cannot read a score, but I love to compose all those different kinds of elements & materials… It’s not really visual art, sometimes it’s like a movie, video art, & a concert, even. I want to blur the borders between genres of artworks, art forms.” –– Ryoji Ikeda

Ikeda’s “test pattern [times square]” captures the abstract digital language of the data-driven world, set in one of the most media-saturated public spaces in the world during Times Square Arts Midnight Moment program. In partnership with the French Institute Alliance Française & The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
