I’ve spent years exploring the world of Mexican boxing, and what stays with me most often happens outside the fight: the hands wrapping a boxer’s wrists, the prayers before entering the ring, the coach’s voice in the corner, the family waiting nearby.

I wanted No Te Dejes (@notedejesmx) to bring people closer to that world. Through photography, film, sound, and installation, the exhibition follows the boxer’s journey through preparation, fear, pain, care, and the will to continue. Faith runs through it, not only as prayer, but as trust in the people who stand beside you.

To me, that’s what makes boxing in Mexico so much more than a sport. It’s a story rooted in Mexico’s identity, but one I hope people around the world can feel.

- '𝐍𝐨 𝐓𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐬' - For five years, artist and filmmaker David Hanes-González (@davidmfoto) has documented Mexican boxing beyond the violence of the ring, revealing a world shaped by Catholic devotion, ritual, sacrifice, family, discipline and survival.

At the heart of 'No Te Dejes' (@notedejesmx) is 'The Will to Continue', fourteen photographs reimagining the Stations of the Cross through the journey of a Mexican boxer. The fighter accepts the fight, carries his burden, falls, receives help, endures pain and continues forward. Featured here are seven images from the fourteen-part series.

Across the wider project, the ring becomes almost sacred: a place where fear, prayer, discipline and endurance meet, surrounded by Catholic imagery and the everyday objects of boxing.

No te dejes is a phrase heard constantly in Mexican boxing:

Don’t back down.
Don’t surrender.
Keep fighting.

For Hanes-González, those words came to mean something beyond the ring, a way of understanding the will to continue through life itself.

The project is also a love letter to his parents, his abuelita, Mexico, and the fighters and coaches he met along the way.

Ultimately, No Te Dejes is not about never falling.

It is about finding a reason to rise again.

On view August 29 – October 9, 2026 at the Latino Cultural Center, (@latinoculturalcenter) 2600 Live Oak St., Dallas, Texas.

For the past five years, Mexico’s boxing community has welcomed me into its gyms, homes, fights, and everyday lives. That trust made No Te Dejes possible.

Now, the project enters its next chapter: giving back to the community that has given so much to me.

Through El Arte de No Dejarse, a portion of proceeds will be reinvested into the Mexican boxing community, supporting fighters, coaches, neighborhood gyms, and the next generation. Because the art of not giving in also means creating opportunities for others to keep moving forward.

Esa confianza hizo posible No Te Dejes.

For five years, artist David Hanes-González (@davidmfoto) has immersed himself in the Mexican boxing community, inside its gyms, homes, training camps and fights, documenting not only what happens in the ring, but the faith, sacrifice and determination that carry a fighter forward.

NO TE DEJES (@notedejesmx) is a mixed-media exhibition exploring the cultural and spiritual dimensions of Mexican boxing through photography, video, installation and sound.

Rather than focusing solely on champions or the glory of fight night, the exhibition looks at the boxer’s everyday journey: the discipline of training, the fear before a fight, the sacrifices made by families and coaches, and the will to continue when no one is watching.

Throughout the work, the language and rituals of religion intersect with those of the boxing gym, revealing spaces where faith, perseverance and survival often exist side by side.

No Te Dejes means “Don’t give in.”
A warning. A blessing. A command.

The Mother of Those Who Fight.

Throughout Mexico, La Virgen de Guadalupe is a symbol of protection and devotion. I see her everywhere in boxing, around the necks of fighters, sewn onto shorts, and watching over gyms from small altars. A reminder that even when a boxer fights alone, they are never entirely alone. This piece is my interpretation of that protection: La Virgen watching over those who fight.

I carry her with me too. I wear her around my neck and keep her in my home as a reminder of my mother and my abuelita. I carry their love with me. It gives me the same feeling of protection I’ve witnessed in so many fighters.

Faith begins within you. Practice it every day.

In the gym, it takes shape through the movements you repeat, the exhaustion you push through, and the decision to begin again. Before facing anyone else, you learn to keep going for yourself.

NO TE DEJES (@notedejesmx) is an immersive exhibition by visual artist and filmmaker David Hanes-González (@davidmfoto), exploring Mexican boxing through photography, film, sound and installation.

Featured here are the final four works from The Will to Continue, fourteen photographs reimagining the Stations of the Cross through the journey of the Mexican boxer.

XI — The Boxer Endures the Pain.

Photographed at Gimnasio Julián Magdaleno in Guadalajara, two fighters meet mid-exchange. Like Christ enduring the cross, the boxer remains standing through exhaustion, punishment and doubt, choosing to continue when the body tells him to stop.

XII — The Boxer Takes His Last Breath.

Under the lights at Deportivo Maracaná in Tepito, Ciudad de México, a fighter receives a devastating blow and is knocked out. After being asked to continue again and again, the body finally gives way.

XIV — The Boxer Is Laid to Rest.

After a long training session in Tacubaya, Ciudad de México, a boxer stands before the Virgin of Guadalupe and prays. The gloves are off. The work is finished. What remains is the ritual, the quiet return to faith after everything the body has endured.

Together, the final four stations move through pain, collapse, victory and prayer. The journey ends where so much of Mexican boxing begins: with faith.

Featured here are four works from The Will to Continue, a series of 14 photographs inspired by the Stations of the Cross, reimagining the Mexican boxer’s journey through sacrifice, struggle, faith and the will to keep moving forward.

VII — The Boxer Falls the Second Time.

Photographed at Escuela de Boxeo SSC Zona Norte Quetzalcóatl, a training facility for police officers in the Narciso Bassols neighborhood of Mexico City. During a sparring session, a boxer leans forward against the ropes, his gloves holding him up as exhaustion pulls his body downward.

VIII — The Boxer Meets Those Who Grieve.

Photographed at Deportivo Maracaná in Tepito, a young boxer sits in his corner surrounded by his team. Their hands rest on his head and shoulders, capturing the care, concern and collective weight carried by those beside him.

IX — The Boxer Falls the Third Time.

Two boxers meet beneath the lights at Deportivo Maracaná in Tepito, during the first night of open-air fights staged on the venue’s football field.

X — The Boxer Is Left Exposed.

A professional boxer stands alone training inside Gimnasio Dr. Horacio Ramírez Mercado in Tacubaya, CDMX, in 2021. Framed in the gym’s mirror with motivation and protection on each wall.

Together, these photographs move through exhaustion, vulnerability and collective care, revealing what surrounds a boxer when the body begins to give way.

XI | The Boxer Endures the Pain

Part of ‘The Will to Continue,’ fourteen photographs reimagining the Stations of the Cross through the journey of the Mexican boxer. Like Christ enduring the pain of the cross, the boxer remains standing through exhaustion, punishment, and doubt. Choosing to continue when the body tells him to stop.

In the background, a phrase by legendary trainer José “Chepo” Reynoso (@cheporeynoso_) reads: “Lo peor que te puede suceder es que te valga madre perder.” A reminder that pain is part of the fight, but becoming comfortable with losing is something else entirely.

The photograph was made at Gimnasio Julián Magdaleno in Guadalajara, Jalisco, the same neighborhood gym where a young Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (@canelo) trained under Chepo and Eddy Reynoso (@caneloteam) developing the foundations that would carry him from Guadalajara to the world stage.
