Recently started driving the MG beginning the running in process and noticed an annoying buzzing sound coming from the gearlever as the car accelerates through the low rev range.

There is a spring loaded nylon cup seated in the selector lever, the ball end of the gearlever sits on the cup. This setup is designed to remove any play in the gearlever. A good indicator of something wrong is by applying downward pressure on the gear knob. If the buzzing disappears then it's time to do a little investigation.

On inspection after removing the gearlever I found the spring had broken. I cleaned inside the remote housing, greased and fitted a new spring and nylon cup.

All sorted, now back to running the engine in.

There is potential for the A-Series engine to leak oil from the rear scroll seal if the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) isn't working satisfactorily. On my engine I have utilised the original timing cover canister outlet and connected a hose to the inlet manifold heater pipe exiting to an NPT adaptor.

I decided to add a second breather from the rocker cover using some @norgrenmet pneumatic fittings and clear hose I had over from a previous project. I connected the timing cover and the rocker cover breather to a tee-piece and then used a straight adapter directly connected to the HIF44 carburettor. The straight adapter was a perfect fit on the carburettor. The Norgren fittings are good quality and fit together nicely producing a completely leak free seal.

So far the breather system is performing perfectly and no leaks but these are early days as I have only just started running in the engine following recent road tests. More to come!

The original telescopic bonnet strut was never fit for purpose. The heavy weight of the bonnet and the strut fixed on one side causes severe twisting.

I decided to make my own using a length of carbon fibre tube. I designed a bonnet spring cup in CAD and 3D printed the model using carbon fibre filament and fixed a rubber walking stick foot onto the other end. The result is a strong, lightweight prop which can easily be stored in the boot.

No more twisted bonnet.

Part- 6 Engine rebuild, the engine and gearbox back in the car. With the engine fully built up the gearbox was inspected, cleaned and new gaskets and seals fitted where necessary. I fitted the gearbox to the engine whilst it was on the stand. By using an engine crane load leveller I managed to install the engine and gearbox back in the MG in about 20 minutes.

The cylinder head was fitted later using a Payen BK450 (black version) head gasket.

Part-5 Engine rebuild, the camshaft. The next part to assemble was the camshaft. Originally I had a @kentcams MD256 Kent camshaft but with the engine having a major overhaul and to maximise the performance I have now fitted a Kent MD276 cam with an all steel vernier adjustable duplex timing gear assembly. As the MG will no longer be raced I preferred to use a steel timing gear as opposed to an alloy version. It is essential to use a good lubricant when assembling the camshaft and other engine components, I have always used @torcoracefuels MPZ engine assembly lube when building up an engine.

A good oil pump is vital to any engine, I struggled to find a pump that I was happy with it terms of quality but thankfully I came across an Autopumps UK Ltd oil pump, maybe because it's new the pump instantly pressurises the system which is important.

I was unsure how the engine would idle with the MD276 but apart from a slight unevenness it is fine. Looking forward to seeing how it all performs when I take the MG out for its maiden run soon.

Part-4 Engine rebuild, building up the engine block. With the engine cylinder block rebored, honed and painted, the next stage was to fit replacement camshaft bearings to suit the new camshaft. New main bearings, big end bearings and sized thrust washers were also fitted. As part of the engine balancing the crankshaft and conrod assembly was balanced by @swiftuneengineering

A new bronze bush was pressed into the crankshaft to suit the gearbox input shaft.

Part-3 Engine rebuild, the balanced flywheel and clutch. The flywheel required refacing, a machining operation carried out by precision grinding the face, this helps to ensure the smooth operation of the clutch by reducing the build-up of heat caused by friction and minimises judder when taking up drive.

I decided to have the rotating parts of the engine balanced. The Borg and Beck clutch @firstlineltd was balanced with the flywheel, crankshaft, conrods and front pulley.

The balancing was carried out by @swiftuneengineering.

Part-2 Engine rebuild, the cylinder head. On inspection there was a slight compression leak between the valves and their seats. The cylinder head had previously been fitted with hardened valve seats as part of the stage conversion along with the gas flowing. I visited @swiftuneengineering who are local to me and they carried out an overhaul of the head which included the fitting of new hardened valve seats cut to match the valves and a surface skim etc.

Once the engineering work was completed the cylinder head was cleaned, reassembled and finished in a couple of coats of BMC green paint.

Part-1 Engine rebuild. I have been asked if I would post further images of the engine rebuild I completed a few years ago.

The engine block was completely stripped down, degreased and cleaned back to bare metal. It was identified that the timing gear oil way was partially blocked as a result of a manufacturing defeat; probably a poorly made sand core plug was used when the block was cast.

The oil way hole was opened up by using a die grinder and finished with a file. The cylinder block was previously bored out to 1293cc but I was never really happy with the way the rebore was carried out, the engine always felt tight when accelerating hard. As I thought, it was found that the work carried out on the bores was very poorly done so the block had to be bored out to +.060" to ensure a perfect bore for the new pistons and rings. The top of the cylinder block was also skimmed, pressure tested and new camshaft bearings fitted.

The cylinder block was finally finished in a couple of coats of BMC green paint.
