A little behind-the-scenes look at a composition I’m working on for a game.

Each section has a purpose in the level, from keeping things calm in the beginning to marking important moments like checkpoints.

Still a work in progress, but it’s coming together!

In a roguelike, players can hear the same music dozens of times.

So how do you keep it from getting repetitive without composing 20 different tracks?

For *Mexican Ninja*, I built an adaptive music system that randomly selects different sections of the exploration and combat music, with transition jingles that help everything flow naturally.

The result? More variety, exciting combat transitions, and more mileage out of a relatively small amount of music.

**Sometimes, you don’t need more music. You need a system that makes your music work harder.**
