So special to encounter this work. From the museum wall text: The Polyptych of Saint Anthony by Piero della Francesca
Piero della Francesca is the ideal of the universal Renaissance artist incarnate. A painter, mathematician and architect, in his production art and science blend to perfection, giving rise to a lexicon of sublime, lyrical abstraction.
The Polyptych of Saint Anthony, complete with almost all its original elements, was painted for the Franciscan Tertiaries in the convent of Sant Antonio in Perugia in 1467-1469. Those were the same years when Piero was also working in Urbino for Federico da Montefeltro, where the stimulating comparison with one of the most refined and cultivated courts of the day led him to some absolute pinnacles of achievement.
The commission for this work probably came from Ilaria Baglioni, the daughter of the Lord of Perugia, Braccio, and a member of the convent.
The complex structure of this altarpiece was designed to enable it to adapt to the narrow space of the church’s presbytery, although it also reflects the taste of an audience that still appreciated some ideas inherited from the past, very distant from the artist’s own vision. As a consequence, optical stratagems that erase the division of the central register combine with the masterful perspective rendered in the Annunciation in the top, a sensational synthesis of Piero’s studies of mathematics and geometry.
There is evidence of the maestro’s fascination with Flemish painting, which he experienced directly during his stay in Urbino, in the way he experimented with the technique of oils and in his extraordinary effects of light, which are best appreciated in the Stigmata of Saint Francis in the predella which, together with the Dream of Constantine frescoed by Piero himself in Arezzo, is one of the first nocturnal paintings in modern art.
