Dear all,

writing this as I’m taking the train along the coast of Italy’s second-most-overlooked region, Le Marche (pretty hotels!), on my way to get some final bike rides in and hopefully at least one more half marathon along the shore.

Definitely helping with that is @jessgillamsax, who has just dropped her new album SHINE which is a sensational mixtape combining 900 years of music, ranging from compositions by Hildegard von Bingen to an arrangement of CPE Bach’s Flute concerto and contemporary works such as the title track. You’ll get instantly addicted to it!

@francescotristanoofficial was in top form at his “Bach & Beyond” show at Theater Basel last weekend which I had the pleasure to co-present.

The city itself I really recommend hospitality-wise, too: got a good night’s sleep in the cozy design hotel @volkshausbasel (designed by the Elbphilharmonie’s architects Herzog & de Meuron) …

… after our post-concert hang at @camparibarbasel …

… where you get superb ambiance, rich Apéro Plättli and Negronis in all their forms.

Impromptu Invites

Dear all,  Swipe for my current recommendations or read it in full on Substack ..

The Invite is hilarious and already a hit! A situational, penelopecruz-ing comedy at its finest, directed by Olivia Wilde, who also stars alongside Seth Rogen and Edward Norton. It marked my two-month-streak of going to the cinema (after Odyssey in August) - something we all should do a lot more often! - and I also consider it the legitimate successor to Carnage in the genre Kammerspiel.
[Note to self: re-watch Carnage and book a trip to beautiful @solomeoofficial to watch the play by Yasmina Reza.]

Obviously, Oktoberfest is the main attraction in Munich right now - impromptu alternatives are as follows: Tonight @chenreiss at Kammerspiele and ...

… on October 2nd, @francescotristanoofficial returns to @bergson. More recommended experiences on my website!

Still flabbergasted it took me two years after its release to properly discover @jakub.jozef.orlinski’s amazing program #LetsBarock!

Also, would also kindly ask any audience members of Semele at the Bayerische Staatsoper to report back how many backflips he pulls off throughout the production. Letter of Recommendations: FRANtastic Findings

Dear all,
after my summer travels, my map of favorite places on may website also got a lot of updates and its first US entries, too.

Enjoyed spending some time in San Francisco two weeks ago, my highlights include @tiat.place, a gallery on the intersection of art and technology …

… as well as @citylightsbooks …

… besides obviously marveling at the anticipating behaviour of autonomously driving cars!

After selling it out three times, @francescotristanoofficial will be back at the Elektra Tonquartier @bergson Munich on October 2 and a week later, on October 10, I’m happy to announce that I’m co-presenting his Bach & Beyond show at @theaterbasel - grab your discounted tickets now via my website!

With the new cultural season upon us, my cultural recommendations in my favorite cities are obviously up-to-date and bursting with familiar as well as new faces - do have a look and hopefully take them as inspiration for a spontaneous or planned city escape.

I, for example, haven’t decided yet where to catch the fabulous Fran Lebowitz on the European leg of her tour. Let me know if you’d like to go, too, and can potentially team up!

Book-wise I really enjoyed reading @florencegaub’s “Zukunft” (luckily already translated into English) where she shows convincing examples of how everyone can influence a positive future for themselves and society as a whole.

The writing of this letter of recommendation is powered by @arashsafaiancomposer’s beautiful work “ÜberBach” - he’s supposed to drop something new, you’ll hear about it here for sure!

Halls & Horizons

Dear all,
greetings from Évian-les-Bains, where last night a beautiful new concert hall was unveiled: La Source Vive completes @les_melezes_evian and becomes the little sister of La Grange au Lac.
I was lucky to get a private tour through both halls by their respective architects before enjoying an immensely beautiful all-Brahms evening! Last night’s concert was also the opening of Les Rencontres Musicales d’Évian 2026, which marks its 50th anniversary. Congratulations and many thanks for inviting me again!

You’ll find some of their concerts on my curated concert calendar on my website!

On the beautiful train and boat journey to Évian, I jumped between @johannapiano’s new album Dialoge and @omerkleinmusic’s The Poetics - do listen to them, too!

On the reading side, @jloladada - who was just announced as Co-CEO of Langdock! - and her co-authors are currently going viral with Europe 2031 and I highly recommend giving it a read to understand what staying on the current course with regard to AI can potentially result in.
