Our first headline gig at the @mtc_cologne was really special for us and we're so grateful for everyone that came to the concert. Not only was this our longest gig yet, we also had @davidwisecomposer performing some of his hits together with us.

We played soundtracks from games like Donkey Kong Country, Sonic Adventure 2, Final Fantasy VII, League of Legends and many more.

Our goal is to organise even more concerts next year to create a space for the VGM community to come together and celebrate these songs. We hope to see you there.

Big thank you to everyone at @materiacollective for helping us make this concert and our gigs at @gamescom happen.

Listen to me ramble on about the good old days at Rare, talk about Donkey Kong, Starfox and Battletoads - and maybe even Diddy Kong Racing - probably the best kart racer ever made.

Joining me under the spotlight will be Ben from @jiggytones

After I miraculously got the job at Rare in 1987, Tim Stamper showed me the ropes and taught me how to create graphics for games such as Wheel of Fortune, Hollywood Squares and California Games.

I slowly began to progress within the company — baby steps at first, with small salary increases and the occasional bonus to give me a bit of incentive. The first thing I spent my extra money on, was a COLOUR portable Tv for my bedroom so I could play on my Commodore 64 in luxury. Then, I bought a sequencer with my first ‘bonus’ and thought I was going to be ‘Paul Hardcastle’ lol. But that never really happened 😅

But I certainly wasn’t expecting a car to be delivered to the company on my 17th birthday!

Okay… it was probably also a good way of making sure I could get into the office every day 😂 — but that little car gave me an enormous amount of independence, and I’ll never forget it.

Those very early days at Rare are something I’ll always treasure. The Stamper brothers treated us young employees like family, and I suppose over the years that’s exactly what formed there: a huge family of video game developers.

We’ve all moved on and do different things now, but I’m very pleased to say I’m still in touch with some of my closest friends from those Rare days — and I’m lucky enough to work alongside some of them every week at Playtonic.

A few little pieces of my own video game history that somehow survived all these years. by @davidwisecomposer
