For the first time in my tenure as President of our National Treasure, I missed a Spring Choir Concert. However, I was compelled to travel to Connecticut to celebrate my brother’s 80th birthday, which coincided with the birthdays of my nephew and great nephew. The family gathering was truly special, filled with love, warmth, laughter, and storytelling. It was a refreshing experience that rejuvenated me. by @davidwwi

Five years into our Transformation Morgan 2030: Leading the Future Strategic Vision and Plan, I’m pleased to report that we are on track to achieve many of our goals. Morgan is rapidly emerging as a leading research and innovation university in Maryland and across the nation. We remain committed to building a high-performing HBCU with very high research activity—without losing our soul. We embrace AI—but we’ll do our part to lead the technology and not merely be an actor in the play.

Partnerships, investments, and collaborations are essential to this progress.

Hail to a hero who stood tall, confronting and challenging power throughout his life to open doors for the disenfranchised. He never backed down in his fight for freedom, justice, and equality for all. His 1988 speech at the Democratic National Convention was one of the finest I have ever heard, and he delivered an equally powerful commencement message in 2015 at “The National Treasure.” by @davidwwi

Yesterday, after a long day of flight delays returning from Indianapolis, where I attended the Lumina Board meeting, I arrived back on campus around 6:30 p.m. I immediately joined several members of my leadership team to serve Thanksgiving dinner to thousands of our students. The atmosphere was joyful, full of family spirit and high energy. We all ate far too much—and had an overflow of fun.

During my tenure as President, I’ve never missed the swearing in ceremony of the new group of SGA leaders. These National Treasure students are raising their hands to lead and it warms my heart. They understand that I/we expect them to not get distracted by distractions. They are in training at Morgan to lead the future…and they must keep “their eyes 👀 on the prize”.

As President of The National Treasure, I consider myself an honorary member of every student organization on campus; however, occasionally, I have to remind my brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha (Beta Alpha Chapter) what is expected of them as leaders. These are truly impressive young men!!! by @davidwwi

Just arrived in Boston and headed straight to one of my favorite lobster spots—Atlantic Fish. I’ll be at one of my Alma Maters tomorrow—Harvard, to give the closing presentation to about 70 senior executives in higher ed who think they want to be university presidents. The university presidency is not the job for glamor and power-seeking leaders. One must be clear about their purpose and willing to endure some majors scars along the way if they are about institutional transformation. My presentation is brutally frank and is highly rated among participants, which is why, I think, Harvard has invited me back for eight consecutive years. More than ever, we need principled, practical, and astute leaders at the apex of leadership at our universities. by @davidwwi

It’s a National Treasure type day on the historic campus of Morgan State University. Everything I need a reminder of why I do what I do, I visit the towering statue of Frederick Douglass in front of iconic Holmes Hall.

We have had some terrific conversations and I always leave deepened in my resolve to keep walking and keep leading boldly to make the nation and world better for all.

In honor of Juneteenth, I participated in a spirited panel discussion with three other HBCU presidents (Stillman College, Grambling State, and Delaware State), sponsored by SodexoMagic, a company operated by Magic Johnson. We talked about the impact of HBCUs in local economic development, in innovation, job creation, in growing a vibrant middle class, and in building healthy and prosperous communities in our regions. HBCUs are the heavy hitters in American higher education and they should receive heavy investments from the private sector, the philanthropic community, and state federal governments. It is past time
for these institutions—pillars of our democracy—to be respected for the terrific job they do in moving millions of Americans into the middle and upper socioeconomic classes in our nation. There’s nothing controversial about that!!! by @davidwwi

Thank you, Governor Wes Moore, for your support of Maryland’s HBCUs by encouraging State Agencies to develop meaningful partnerships with us in areas that advance the mission of the respective agencies while taking advantage of the expertise within our universities. Kudos!!! by @davidwwi

Last week, I was honored to be among an outstanding group of leaders in our beloved city to be recognized as one of “The Game Changers” in Baltimore. Those of you who know me understand that I’m not in this work to receive awards; I’m doing it because I believe, unconditionally, in the brilliance of our students, the impact of our cutting-edge research and the complete transformation of Morgan into a national hub of place-making innovation.
