Tight-joint marble chevron. No grout line, no room for drift.

This marble chevron backsplash in Winchester, MA runs the length of the kitchen, behind the range, under the uppers and around the window over the sink. Polished Thassos, Carrara and blue-grey marble on 9x13 sheets.

With a normal mosaic the grout joint absorbs small errors. Here every sheet has to land exactly where the last one ended, and the chevron points have to line up across the whole wall. One row off and the next row is worse.

So the layout started centered on the range, and every row got checked against a laser before the next sheet went up. Around the window we ran a laser on a pole to carry the line across the opening and pick the pattern back up on the other side.

Second wall in the same kitchen got an Ann Sacks Savoy Arrowhead mosaic under floating oak shelves with lights built in. Glazed ceramic, kite and triangle pattern, glaze that pools at the edges. A different pattern with its own rule: the wall has to be dead flat or every reflection shows it.

Chevron tile on the pallet. Up or down?

This is the large-format porcelain going on the master shower walls in Dover. Whole-house tile job, seven bathrooms, close to 3,000 square feet of floor. Deliveries are landing almost every week.

The client is deciding which way the chevron points. My recommendation is up. On shower walls, the grout joints then run downhill, the same direction the water does. That is the kind of detail that decides how a shower looks and performs ten years from now, not just on install day.

I wrote up the full reasoning, including when down makes sense: Should Chevron Tile Point Up or Down in a Shower? What I Tell My Clients.
