Last month I had the pleasure to be a part of @thevillagephilly Staying Power Artist Grantee Exhibition.

The theme was “What does staying power mean to you?” Staying power to me means being able to adapt and change. So I decided to make an interactive painting. I made an RGB painting consisting of three layers. An RGB light reactive painting where you use subtractive primary colors in three different layers. The base layer is my skeleton, the second layer is me, and the third layer is a polyphemus moth. I wanted to show change through life, death and rebirth. I chose the moth because spiritually they represents transformation, intuition, rebirth, change, and the soul’s journey.

I decided to try projection mapping for the first time. I found some stock videos, made a bunch of different animations, looped them, and I projected them over the painting. The projector was low-key fighting for its life, but I made it work. I didn’t have a frame that was the right size from my prints so I had to make a frame out of two old canvases and then I painted the sides of the canvas, hot pink. For the music, I used the song “Connections by KIsr”

This was my first time doing an art show in two years. I really wanted to do something different so I really wanted to do some kind of installation. I wanted to make an art piece that people could walk into an experience and feel. The process was low-key stressful but I enjoyed it and I learned so much. I love pushing myself creatively and I’m so thankful for this opportunity.
