Warriors at Kyrchyn. Dressed in traditional inspired warrior attire and positioned at the entrances to each of the regional encampments, these stoic, albeit quite friendly in this scenario, countenances evoked the protector element that would have been typical in historical nomadic camps.

For thousands of years hunters across Central Asia have worked alongside golden eagles, a carefully built relationship over years of training. Known as Bürküt Saluu, it is an incredible tradition passed from one generation to the next. In this slideshow you will see an array of Bürkütchü, or eagle hunters, from the competitions at the World Nomad Games, where they competed in two different events, one to return to their trainer’s call and another where each eagle chased a moving lure pulled by a horse at full gallop across the ground, tests of speed and the connection between bird and hunter. Truly incredible to witness up close and in action.

The warm, welcoming, and endlessly fascinating world of the ordos or yurt camps representing the different regions of Kyrgyzstan throughout the World Nomad Games.

Behind their doors, friendly faces dressed in beautiful traditional clothing welcomed travelers from near and far, offering glimpses into the customs, hospitality, food, and character of the places they had come to represent.

I had the privilege of meeting an incredible array of personalities along the way: Dilbara, who very enthusiastically rounded everyone together for the group portrait in slide one; Kazbek and crew, who gave me my first taste of horse meat (not bad at all, to be honest); and Chinara and Munara, who invited me inside to experience the surreal warmth and beauty of their yurt, along with all the delicious bites and tea it held.

My sincerest thanks to all of the friendly faces who welcomed me so openly. It was an honor and a privilege to spend time with you and to experience even a small piece of your culture and hospitality.

Mongolian mounted archer @dashcharav unfazed by the elements and charging into his round of competition.

Athletes must gallop a 100 meter lane while firing three arrows at three separate targets on different angles- forward, sideways and backward all under 14 seconds, and are scored based on accuracy as well as their time.

Gulkayyr, from Chon-Alai in Kyrgyzstan’s Osh region.

I was first drawn to Gulkayyr not only by her incredible layers upon layers of traditional dress but because, among the many stalls at the market, she was one of the few people I saw actively at work on her craft. She was weaving a patterned ‘бoo’ or ‘boo’ one of the traditional woven bands used to bind and decorate a Kyrgyz yurt. She was doing so with such focus that I was almost hesitant to interrupt. When I finally approached her, though, she seemed fairly open to taking a break.

Dressed in clothing she had made entirely by hand, Gulkayyr explained that her headdress follows a tradition associated with marriage: a kalyak with a durya headscarf, worn over an inner cap called a kep takiya. She described these traditions as reaching back through generations of Kyrgyz history.

I have to note this explanation was entirely possible thanks to @_kyiall. Seeing me struggle with the basic interview questions I had prepared on my phone in Russian, this sweet young woman taps me on the shoulder and asks if I needed help… to phrase it as a question was just being polite, it was clear I needed all the help I could get. With her mother patiently looking on, Kyial jumped into the stall and served as an invaluable bridge between Gulkayyr and I, turning what might have been a brief encounter into one I could truly learn from.

When I(we) asked Gulkayyr what she would like people to know about her culture, her answer felt particularly fitting:

“Our culture is very broad and vast, our history is very rich, and it’s impossible to tell it all briefly.”

A sincere thank you to Gulkayyr for her time and beautiful work, and to Kyial for stepping in to help me understand just a little bit more of it.

A beautiful alpine start in the Tian Shan Mountains.

Kyrgyzstan welcomed @sawgies and I with a truly beautiful day as we hiked off the jet lag in Ala Archa National Park, just south of Bishkek. With a few days in the city before the @world_nomad_games began, there was no way we could resist hauling our oversized packs into the imposing range of near 5,000m peaks that stand directly over the city skyline.

This quick sprint into the mountains was a fitting start to the incredible experience @liberalartswhore had spent two years preparing for and was kind enough to invite us along.

Stay tuned for a very nomad-heavy chapter of this account. Can’t wait to share all the beauty we had the privilege of seeing and experiencing.

9am ET on CBS tomorrow! First saw Punch Bros 5 years ago at the Sheridan Opera House my inaugural weekend in Telluride, and it (obviously) blew my mind. What a welcome into this bluegrass genre that was. Full circle moment to be able to bring this to life.
