Recovering from long COVID symptoms and an ear surgery, I enjoyed writing down my most beautiful memories. So if you have a moment: stop scrolling and let yourself be carried away to some wonderful outdoor moments 🌱💚

The day began with biting cold. Gloves and a buff were essential to keep the chill at bay.

When the sun rose above the peaks the ride change: the frost retreated and the landscape opened up in colour.

What followed was a ride through scenery that seemed almost unreal. The road lay deserted, the silence palpable. Trees in shades of red and gold lined the route, their leaves drifting down in slow spirals.

This ride was one of the most beautiful ones I have ever made. taken in Swiss Alps by @davos_mountains

The best part of a long climb is that moment when you're riding the final meters to the top, and then you get to put your bike down, stuff yourself with a bag of candy, and ride one of the most amazing trails ever!

Some people don’t get why you’d want to do a hut-to-hut hike. They give you a puzzled look when you tell them about your next vacation plans. Why would you choose to spend days walking around in a smelly shirt with a heavy backpack? Well, I have an easy explanation for that: because there’s something magical about hut-to-hut hikes.

You pack your backpack—just enough to live off, but not so much it breaks your back (something I learned the hard way last time)—and then you go. Life becomes simple: walk, look, breathe. And every day ends in a place high up in the mountains. You don’t have to go back down into the valley—you can just stay up there, where (at least I think) the landscape is the most beautiful.

You met people you’d never run into anywhere else. Everyone has their own reason for being there, but each person has a story to tell about their day. Because anyone doing a hut hike has had a memorable day—walking through the mountains brings always a story with you.

I never expected to enjoy the hut camaraderie so much, especially since I’m not a group person at all—I’d usually rather travel alone than with twenty others. But these people felt more like family. We could ask each other anything, and together we studied maps, discovered cool new huts—or ones that were a bit disappointing. During those conversations, we were already making plans for next year—well, this year now. And I’m really curious how that route is going to turn out.

I think this was the most beautiful bike ride of the year, mainly because of the light and the sun ☀️. But also because of the silence. In a place that usually sees quite a few people. Considering how insanely beautiful it is, it’s actually not that crowded, but usually during the day, there are still quite a few visitors. But this time… there was absolutely no one. Literally no one! 😮

I could’ve laid down on the road for hours if I wanted to, without ever being run over by a car 🚴‍♂️😂. And with that golden sun casting a red glow on the tops of the mountains… it was just pure bliss. I rode really slowly just to soak it all in as much as I could 😍.

And afterwards, I waited until the sun had completely set before starting the descent. Which, by the way, was freezing ❄️ because yep, the sun was gone 🤣.

Evening ride on the race bike yesterday, into the side valley toward Sertig. Slipping in a ride between submitting one piece and interviewing someone for the next.

Strapped on my cycling shoes, clicked my helmet into place, and hopped on the bike. The sky was already starting to darken slightly as I turned into the valley road toward Sertig.

I put on a podcast and let myself be carried along by the story about Pim Fortuyn. Normally this road is fairly busy, a favorite route for hikers, day-trippers and locals. But in the evening, it was quiet. Just one car passed me. That was it. As if someone had hit pause on all traffic.

At the end of the road, by the large country house where there’s usually a bustle of people — wandering around or wrapped in blankets at the outdoor tables — there was no one.

To my right, wildflowers were in full bloom. Bursts of color, as if someone had placed them there deliberately — like a detail in a carefully composed film set. And ahead of me, in the distance, two towering mountains rose up.

Looking back on Day 2 of our hut-to-hut hike 2024

On the second day of our hut-to-hut hike, we walked from the Wiesbadenerhütte to the Tübingerhütte. Knowing it would be a long day, we decided to skip breakfast at the Wiesbadenerhütte. Initially, I had planned to stay overnight at the hut located 8 kilometers away, but Jur preferred to continue to another hut further along, making the hike 14 kilometers long and taking us across multiple peaks and glaciers—a challenging route!

We started walking at half past seven. Unfortunately, I had barely slept the night before and was dragging myself along like a zombie, weighed down by my backpack. My energy came mainly from biscuits, which I ate religiously every ten minutes. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so many cookies in one day before!

We reached the first peak and descended, only to come across a sign that warned: 'Only suitable for well-trained hikers.' This triggered a pang of fear, especially when I looked up and saw nothing but a trail winding through huge rocks ahead.

The low point of the day came when, after a wrong turn, I ended up in steep scree that slid downward with every move I made. My fear turned into complete panic—an experience I had never had in the mountains before. Later, I found out that we had strayed off the path, which explained why I had ended up in such treacherous terrain.

Luckily, the worst was behind me, and the glacier we had to tackle next wasn’t as bad as I feared. We were able to walk along the edge of it, which was still nerve-wracking without trekking poles. I quickly realized that "skiing" was the best option, so I glided my way across to the other side.

From there, the final stretch to the hut was relatively short—well, compared to the rest of the hike. It still took another 1.5 hours of descending and climbing before we arrived. After about 9 or 10 hours of hiking, I was overjoyed to see the Tübingerhütte. My feet were aching, with a sizeable blister on my right heel, so the relief of finally taking off my shoes was immense!

All the huts for this summer have been selected, and the routes to them are planned as well! We’ve already booked the two huts that are staffed. The last hut is an unstaffed hut, which means there’s no food or anyone to assist us. Super exciting, of course, but also a bit thrilling in a way😅

With the official start of spring, it's time to reflect on this winter season ☃️🤍

This winter, my goal was to learn a new sport: snowboarding. For the first three days, things went really well while we were practicing at the farm 🤣, but once I got up on the slope, I was absolutely terrified of snowboarding downhill! Those turns heading toward the valley made me feel like I was going to tumble straight down into it... 🙈 At one point, I was so scared of heights that I was trembling and too afraid to move, so there I was, just lying on the slope. Better luck next year 😛.
