Join us on August 13th from 6–8 p.m. at Pen + Brush for a discussion between journalist and educator Robin Cembalest, our Executive Director and Chief Curator Dawn Delikat, and photographer Christine L. Mace on the importance of mentorship, advocacy, and community—from the perspectives of the mentor, the institution, and the artist.

Through her work as executive director of @penandbrushnyc, Dawn Delikat (@dawnoftheart) champions gender equity and greater representation for women artists and writers. She also brings her expertise to the Vilcek Foundation as a member of our Arts Advisory Committee, helping guide our exhibitions and arts and culture programs.

For more than 130 years, Pen + Brush has held a simple but radical belief: that the story of art and literature is only as truthful as the breadth of voices we allow to shape it.

Our work is not about filling gaps. It is about expanding the canon.

Each exhibition, each artist we champion, each publication, each conversation we open is part of a larger, ongoing effort to ensure that women, trans women, and gender-expansive artists and writers are seen, taken seriously, and carried forward into the cultural record. We are proud to be a place where artists are not only exhibited but supported with the professional scaffolding that advances their careers, builds their markets, and affirms the depth and rigor of their practices.

This is work that matters. It is work that endures.

And it is work that does not happen by accident. The things we value, the culture we want to live in, the voices we believe deserve to be heard only continue when they are actively supported. They require participation. They require investment. They require people who choose, again and again, to stand behind them.

Year after year, this work is sustained by a community that believes, as we do, that culture is stronger when it reflects many voices rather than a select few.

On May 13, we gather not simply to celebrate, but to invest in that future.

Your support ensures that artists with something vital to say are not sidelined but amplified. That bold, necessary perspectives continue to move forward. That the next generation of the canon is shaped with intention, equity, and vision.

All the artists I met at the opening of New York’s Every Woman Biennial, which features some 400 women and nonbinary artists! 🎨 🌈Last day to see it—and get $35 vending machine mystery art—is today, at Pen + Brush, 29 East 22nd Street, and the closing party goes until 9! As I wrote for @artnet (link in bio), “The Every Woman Biennial is a joyful reminder that women will never be silenced, and that we will always find new venues to tell—and celebrate—our stories.”
