I’ve been visiting South West Cornwall for over 30 years and have so many photos of sunsets, beaches and rocks. This is from 10 years ago. The sunset at Gwithian, Hayle is beautiful as you look towards St Ives but I liked the light looking east, away from the intense light in the west. Painting the pink whisps of vapour so that they appear to be floating under the blue sky was the main challenge here. @unisoncolour , @sennelier1887 @jacksons and @blueearthpastels used on @pastelmat_clairefontaine 28cm x 22cm by @dawnt_art_

This is my second test of this piece that I would like to do on a larger scale sometime in the future. I do struggle with foliage, knowing how much to describe and how much to suggest is something I find hard. I think it’ll be a challenge working on a larger scale! La Concha, El Cotilla. 🌊This has been a challenge from start to finish, and I’m grateful to the help given by the pastel artists in the @unisoncolour fb group. The transition from the golden ‘glow’ to the deep blue sky without turning everything green, getting the glow to actually glow and then working out how to paint the foreground rocks as they would have appeared, rather than the flattened silhouetted version on the photograph have all been steep learning curves. I’ve painted this for a friend from her photo of a place that has a special memory for her, so it was important to get it to how she remembered it! taken in El Cotillo, Fuerteventura by @dawnt_art_

I’ve just finished a paint along zoom course with @rebeccademendonca.artist . I’ve never worked so fast and it was so freeing to make such quick, loose marks and make vivid colour choices. I love Rebecca’s work and how she paints the light is wonderful. I’ve now got to work out how to integrate these techniques into my work. 😊 I used velour paper for the first time that I had been given. I didn’t expect it to eat my pastels like it did! by @dawnt_art_

The woods from the bridge using @unisoncolour (a20 and p5 were particularly useful) @sennelier1887, @blueearthpastels and @jacksons_art soft pastels on @pastelmat_clairefontaine paper. @carandache pastel pencils also came in handy. A little larger this time at 22 cm x 30cm. This is going to a local church for their exhibition of local scenes. The frosted grass caused me some difficulties on this one and was brushed back a couple of times. Some of the photos were taken whilst my daylight lamp was on. by @dawnt_art_

How it was just before I ruined it…and how it was when I took it off the easel. I overworked the clouds in the golden band at the bottom, turned them all a murky green and washed it all back, but having been worked on and then watered the fine grit on the paper wasn’t the same and the pastel just wasn’t doing what it wanted, so, it’s gone away for the sake of my sanity! by @dawnt_art_

Maybe some tinkering to be done on the wave on the left and the foreground vegetation. Will only know after I’ve slept on it! by @dawnt_art_

Cloud study iii: Quiescence on @pastelmat_clairefontaine using @unisoncolour @sennelier1887 and @jacksons_art soft pastels. This was the trickiest of the three. The sea is more maroon than blue and at one stage looked a little bit like mud. The clouds are more like wisps that dissolve into the air and the right hand side cloud had to be reimagined as the reference had a highly detailed cloud formation on that side that just didn’t work in this painting, no matter how hard I tried, it looked unbalanced. The progression for this series emerged as I was painting them. In Presence the subject is most definitely the mass of the cloud, in Brilliance it’s the light and in this one, it’s the absence of cloud in the pale blue centre so after the storm there is peace, hence the title Quiescence. And to be honest, with the other two ending in the syllable ‘nce ’ I couldn’t think of a better word! Swipe to see the various stages. by @dawnt_art_
