Non award winning amateur wildlife 'photographer'...what I lack in skill I make up for in enthusiasm 😃 Mostly pleased if the shot comes out in focus

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Out of the thousands of photos I’ve taken of kingfishers, this is probably my favourite. For once I didn’t sneeze at the critical time, or set the shutter speed to the wrong setting, or miss half the bird only to have half a kingfisher’s arse on the back of my camera. 🤣

Taken at Staffordshire Wildlife Hides

Im@going to take a break from Insta for a while (except for when @spaceman.pics does his photo comp…then I’ll pop back on briefly for that), so if I don’t like or comment on your amazing shots, I’m not being rude, just taking some time away from Meta as it’s good for the soul.

Happy snapping everyone 😊

I’ve been trying to edit a high key B&W image of a kingfisher for ages but they just don’t work. They are such bright birds, it seems criminal to tone their blueness down to monotone.
So here is a high(ish) key colour photo with all his blueness still in tact 🙌🏼😊

By the way, does anyone else really struggle to edit kingfishers?
I find them the hardest animal/bird to edit…they often end up a sort of teal green rather than blue…like a sort of Incredible Hulk kingfisher. Or they end up faded or looking cartoony.
Deer and gannets are far more user friendly. Maybe the kingfishers could take a leaf out of their book?…or maybe I could learn how to edit them properly? No, it’s definitely their fault! 😏😬

Last gannet shot from me…although I have about a billion more I could bore you with.
Like the previous flying shot, this hasn’t been cropped and the goal was to play around with a slightly slower shutter speed and then pan with the gannet.

Turns out panning is a skill that takes more than a morning and 12,000 photos to master. This is shot 12,001. Shots 12,002 to 14,695 were all out of focus but my hit ratio of 0.00000001 got me this image…which is ok.
Gannets are very uncooperative birds and simply don’t slow down upon request. Some would call them selfish and self-important…by shot 11,999 I simply called them f*cktards…much to the woman’s displeasure next to me. I tried to explain that I didn’t mean her but she had walked off crying by then.
Anyway - hope you all have a fab week :)

This week has been about trying some different editing styles…just to keep editing interesting.
So why not channel my inner Charlie Chaplin and go black and white?
I showed this photo to my mum and cracked the same Charlie Chaplin joke…she didn’t get it and when I explained it was because it was black and white…like his films, she said ‘or like a crossword?!’ 🫤

So…please enjoy this lovely gannet image inspired by my mum’s inner crossword😬

Nope, didn’t make any sense to me either but who knows how the mind of an 86 year old works 🤷🏼‍♂️
She doesn’t even have instagram so won’t get to see the thousands of people spitting their breakfast out with laughter upon reading her crossword joke.
Brucie had nothing on her 😅

Something quite different for me…inspired by one of my favourite photographers @kathydenbydale
I don’t usually go for pastel tones but I saw Kathy put up a gannet through the pink foliage sometime last year and loved the image. If you don’t follow her, what’s wrong with you?? Go follow her….Do it now…Literally now…sod this photo, go see hers, it’s way better!
It’s like looking at the real Mona Lisa compared to your 8 year old’s crayon effort…full of enthusiasm but without the skill of the original 😬
Anyway, this is my cheap n cheerful knock off of Kathy’s gannet image…it’s what Kathy would create if she was 10 pints deep having not eaten all day. But as with all cheap knock offs, squint enough and it’ll look just like the real thing…failing that, knock back 10 pints and it’ll look like the master piece it wants to be 😃

Back to Bempton and I was trying some panning shots with the gannets. This shot isn’t cropped, it just came out this way as the bird got so close…but I kinda like the way it turned out :)

A male kingfisher diving for breakfast…or lunch…or maybe brunch? Do animals do brunch? It was around 11am so whatever that makes it. At least it’s not a Gregg’s!

A little duckling with his mum and siblings behind him.
This little chap seemed more brave than the others…happier to dart off on his own before the others did.
It reminds me of being a child and my mum calling me back in for dinner…and I ignored her thinking she would believe me if I said I couldn’t hear her. The fact she was stood about 12 feet from me and looking straight into my eyes seemed to have bypassed my little vacant head. My mum thought I was being naughty but I was actually just not that bright 🤣

Oh look, another gannet shot. First it was a low key gannet, then an arty gannet and now a high key gannet. Jack of all trades master of none springs to mind…🤣

When I visited Brampton last year I had two shots in mind…diving gannets from a boat and a lovely shot of a gannet through the pink flowers you sometimes see.
Being me, I forgot to book the boat so it was fully booked, (how selfish of those people), and secondly, I went when those pink flowers weren’t really out.
‘Day has many positive traits although focus isn’t one of them’ wrote a teacher in my school report once. Turns out she may have been on to something there…You’re a genius Mrs Smith.
So I took this shot instead. If you squint really hard, you can almost imagine some pink around the image 😁

They say you can’t polish a turd but they never said you can’t get a buffer out and give it a damn good try.
This was a very plain photo but I sort of liked it…so I tried being all arty and playing around with it.
I quite like it…not a lot, but I quite like (bonus points if you get the quote 🤓

Last year I popped up to Bempton Cliffs. Had never been there before and wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
I had a fab time and will definitely go back when I own a car that I trust to get me there without ending up on the back of an AA Truck.
In the meantime, you’re all stuck with last year’s images. At least they aren’t foxes or kingfishers so small mercies :P.
These two were caught at first dawn as the sun came up…sometimes you just want to shoot the ‘classic’ image of an animal.
It was just me and one other photographer who was far more interested in telling me all about his Canon R3 and why, in many ways, it’s better than the R1 and the grip is better with the extended battery life and…and I switched off after that.
I did tell him that it sounded like we should be taking photos of his camera rather than the birds. I think he got the gist after that as he went off in search of some other victim…probably to tell them about his flash synch capabilities
I think we’ve all stood next to this type of photographer 📸🤣

I was dubious about this shot as I was in a photo hide and knew if I put this little metal object out, the kingfisher would likely land on it. In fact, I had quite a chat with Adam about how unnatural this type of shot would be.
This isn’t really a natural image - I don’t think a kingfisher would ever sit on something so low and unsafe if it were in most waterways.
However, as most of you will see from my portfolio, my photos are a combo of wildlife photography and artistic images. That’s what I enjoy and this image is more artistic than actual ‘wildlife’…hence the explanation.
As an artistic image, for me, it works.
As a wildlife image, it doesn’t.
This opens the debate of what is photography?
In my mind, if you are open and honest and explain what the goal of the image is and process behind it, photography becomes an expression of whatever you want it to be.
