The rise of violence in Mexico has also seen a public softening towards the concept of feminism. Mexican women began to take to the streets to march in large demonstrations. These marches called for the acknowledgement of the gender based violence women face. Mexican feminists created the term "feminicidio" (femicide) to describe the way some women are murdered because they are women.
This was my representation of the sorrow and anger of our beloved Goddess of death to those women who have been taken from their full cycle of life.

🦋En la memoria de las tierras purépechas y mazahuas se susurra que el cielo de noviembre no se cubre de hojas de otoño, sino de alas sagradas.
Parákata 🦋la mariposa monarca🦋no emprende un simple viaje a través del continente; cruza el velo entre mundos para prestarle sus alas a quienes amamos. Friday night, one of Dayesla Ixtli's (@dayeslaixtli) living canvases walked right through the Mezzanine Gallery.

Thank you to everyone who came out during Art Loop Wilmington to celebrate the opening of "Diosas & Guerreras: The Living Canvas" by 2026 Individual Artist Fellow Dayesla Ixtli.

Painted gold and black from face to fingertips, with a calavera (a decorative skull) across her face and lit branches of monarch butterflies all around her, the living canvas showed everyone what Dayesla's work looks like on a moving body.

Missed Friday? The show is up through October 30, just ahead of Día de los Muertos. Come see the headpieces up close, including one crowned with three gold skulls and another made of flowers that trail down on fine wire.
