We were impressed by the robust detailing of Scott’s original work and wanted to emulate the building’s solidity by using strong, natural materials that would stand the test of time and fashion. Oak resonates with the Arts & Crafts heritage and provides a warm toughness both outside and in. The ‘Timber Hall’ and 'Stair Lantern’ above are constructed in an oak frame, exposed inside and out. Sustainable FSC Glulam oak was used for better dimensional stability and because it allows for more efficient use of all parts of the tree. The external facets on the frame make it appear more delicate, let more light in, and create attractive shadows in oblique sunlight. The structure was precision cut from a 3D model using CNC technology, designed and realised in close collaboration with Cowley Timber, a local firm with a national reputation for beautiful wooden structures, in particular the Bishop Edward King Chapel with @niallmclaughlinarchitects and Alfriston Pool with @moco_arch Old Four Row Nocton Lincolnshire 2017-2020 Mark Marshall Hannah Bowers Marta Llorens James Daykin Photography @buildingnarratives Article @architectsjournal Timber structure @cowleytimber+partners #peoplemakingbuildings #daykinmarshallstudio #privatehousing #listedbuilding #georgegilbertscott #conservationarchitecture #timberengineering #cowleytimber #mullions #tripleglazing #baywindow #tudor #timberhall #noctonhall #nkdc #beeswaxdyson #gothicrevival #neogothic #themodernhouse #spab #englishheritage #nationaltrust #enigmalighting #ketleybrick #royaldoulton #copperroofing #formalgardens #croquet by @daykinmarshall
Given the small footprint of the cottage a continuous floor surface makes the spaces flow together and seem larger. Ketley pavers were chosen for their timeless, indestructible surface finish, their warm colour and radiating properties when combined with underfloor heating. This view towards the kitchen in the original part of the cottage reminds us of a Vermeer painting. Heating and hot water are provided by an air source heat pump hidden in the garden. The extension is triple glazed and heavily insulated, and improvements to original building fabric were made were the Listed status allowed. These discrete 21st century updates make the cottage both cosy and sustainable. Old Four Row Nocton Lincolnshire 2017-2020 Mark Marshall Hannah Bowers Marta Llorens James Daykin Photography @buildingnarratives Article @architectsjournal Timber structure @cowleytimber+partners Lighting @enigma_lighting @originalbtc Flooring @ketleybrick Sustainable Heating: Matrix Energy Systems #peoplemakingbuildings #daykinmarshallstudio #privatehousing #listedbuilding #georgegilbertscott #conservationarchitecture #timberengineering #cowleytimber #mullions #tripleglazing #baywindow #tudor #timberhall #noctonhall #nkdc #beeswaxdyson #gothicrevival #neogothic #themodernhouse #spab #englishheritage #nationaltrust #enigmalighting #ketleybrick #royaldoulton #copperroofing #formalgardens #croquet #originalbtc #matrixenergysystems by @daykinmarshall
Design with a view A packed couple of days on site for one of our latest projects - the renovation of a chalet in the French Alps. Productive meetings, exciting progress, and plenty of inspiration from the breathtaking alpine backdrop 🏔️ Grateful to be collaborating with such a talented team, and always a pleasure working (and travelling) with James from @daykinmarshall Goodbye for now Morillon, we’ll be back soon… #interiorsinprogress #chaletdesign #frenchalpsproject #interiordesign #sitevisit #designinspo #architectureandinteriors #designtrip #mountainviews #claregaskininteriors #daykinmarshall by @daykinmarshall
Our latest project, a splendid Victorian property in Balham, home to a wonderful family of four and their gorgeous dog Winnie. This was a brilliant project to be part of and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. From great clients with fantastic taste, to the talented architects, contractors and trades that were integral to making the project run smoothly (many of whom are now working on our renovation!), it was a marvellous experience. To see more, visit the link in bio, we hope you love it as much as we do. 📸 @nicksmithphoto #claregaskininteriors #londoninteriordesigner #londoninteriordesign #londoninteriors #cgibalhamfamilyhomeproject #londonrenovation by @daykinmarshall
Camera Cabin - Day Three Head over to our Stories to follow progress of the third day as the Studio embarks on the collaborative construction of Camera Cabin with Tim Gaudin and his team. The cabin sits between Maple and Birch trees at bottom of the long narrow garden to a Grade II listed terraced Georgian townhouse. The form is a tapering extrusion allowing views through and light in from the east and west. Glulam softwood logs form the structure, which is insulated internally with cork, all under a simple crinkly tin roof. Camera Cabin Nottinghamshire 2020-2023 The Team Architecture - James Daykin / Mark Marshall Engineering - Flow Structures @flowstructures Carpentry - Tim Gaudin Carpentry @timgaudin Construction - Chloe Allen James Daykin Emma Kingman Shidan Hagos Suppliers Timber - Schneider-Holz Cork - Mike Wye Associates @mike_wye Zinc Roofing - Cladco @cladcoroofing Glazing - SGP @specialist_glazing_products Ground Screws - Stop Digging @stopdigginguk #peoplemakingbuildings #daykinmarshallstudio #gardenstudio #gardenbuilding #gardenoffice #mancave #artiststudio #selfbuild #glulamtimber #corkinsulation #bespokegardenbuilding #kitofparts by @daykinmarshall

A huge thank you to everyone at the East Midlands RIBA for a great evening of discussion around our vital focus on the Climate Challenge and the levity (with a serious message) brought by Studio Bark's Nick Newman. We were very pleased to come away with these two awards for Old Four Row! Thank you! Here's the judge's citation: “This Small Project of the Year demonstrates how a small, listed building can be sustainably retrofitted with high-quality modern interventions, without losing any of its original character – in fact the modern intervention enhances it.” Read more about the project on the pinned posts and on our website. Old Four Row Nocton Lincolnshire 2017 - 2020 Mark Marshall Hannah Bowers Marta Lloren James Daykin @studiobark @riba @ribaeastmidlands #peoplemakingbuildings #buildings #architecture #riba #ribaeastmidlands #ribaawards #ribaawards2023 #eastmidlandsarchitecture #listedbuilding #retrofit #engineeredtimber #copperroofing #timberhall #gothicrevival by @daykinmarshall
Our project at @ashridgecourtfarm in Devon is featured in today’s Sunday Times in an insightful article by Hugh Graham. Thank you Chris and Carolyn for sharing your story and for your commitment to realising the vision with us. As you brilliantly summarise “Ashridge is all about sustainability - both environmentally and economically. The former is in fashion, but without the latter it won’t endure.” Thanks again to all those who collaborated on the project with us. You can read more about Ashridge on our website via the link in the bio by @daykinmarshall
We are excited to announce that our project Old Four Row has been shortlisted for the Wood Awards 2022. The @WoodAwards is a chance to showcase the diverse, creative, and high-quality buildings and furniture being made using the world’s only truly sustainable and renewable material – wood. At Old Four Row, the oak frame, exposed inside and out, is precision cut from a 3D model using CNC technology. The facets on the facade make the frame appear more delicate, let more light in, and create attractive shadows in oblique sunlight. It was made in close collaboration with Cowley Timber, a local firm with a national reputation for beautiful wooden structures. Congratulations to all the other shortlisted projects, we're in great company. The projects can be viewed at the first exhibition at @OxoTowerWharf in a showcase partnering with @ materialmatters.design during l_d_f_official from 22-25 September. A second exhibition which will include models of the building entries will take place from late October to early December at the @thebuildingcentre. Photo @buildingnarratives #peoplemakingbuildings #daykinmarshallstudio #privatehousing #cnc #bespoketimber #glulamoak #woodawards #TDUK #architecture #furniture #design #LDF22 #materialmatters by @daykinmarshall
