Today I went back to Taqueria el Ecuataco on Watervliet (behind Nuestra Tierra). Last time I came by, I was blown away by the Encebollado. When I got there, the owner of the truck was outside and we talked a bit. I told him I loved the soup last time, and he recommended I try his chicken soup. This soup, like everything I’ve bought from him, is amazing. The chicken carcass in the broth tells me he probably did all of this from scratch. Also in the broth, large pieces of potato, carrot, and squash. The portion of chicken was quite large for what I paid ($10??? This is enough food for two people). Chicken and broth were pretty typical for a chicken soup. A few distinct features of the soup are the sauce and the corn. I’m not really sure what the sauce is called, but it’s a bit sweet and very tangy. If anyone knows what it’s called, please drop that in the comments! It complements the saltiness of the broth nicely. I think the half ear of corn is Mote. The very large kernels popped off the cob and into the soup easily. Some went flying a little, but were obviously easy to find. They’re a little chewy, very starchy. I highly recommend this soup- amazing #soup! @piccoloorsettodayton for breakfast today; a generous cup of Meadowlark’s tomato soup. Light and fluffy, jiggly? Very cool bowl, even cooler saucer. Tangy. The mountain of cheese adds a lot. Hasty Tasty- Cheesy Potato Soup. BIG cubes of potato here. Little bits of bacon and such throughout. The “broth” is very thick and creamy. More of a cheese sauce. Nice and simple. Cool bowl. Canal Street- Chicken Mulligatawny Soup. I had a hankering for this earlier today but couldn’t find a definite source, so coming here and seeing it du jour was a great surprise! For those not in the know, mulligatawny is a curry oriented soup from southern India originally, changing significantly as it spread through the British empire. Apples are a common inclusion. This bowl has chicken in it; various vegetables and the meat were all quite small, so it was hard to tell if apple was present as well. Curry was very prominent, with a little bit of heat. A return today to Massaman for Tom Yum Soup, suggested by @angelicziggy . It’s real hot out, but soup is a year round food. A mix of veggies here- tomato, lemongrass, and mushrooms were most prominent. I ordered it with shrimp. Warning: they still have tails! I used to date a girl who would eat the shrimp tails, I always thought that was a bit odd. You can also have this with chicken. It’s a bit spicy (3) per my request; the broth itself isn’t really a normal hot and sour as I expected, and tastes sort of like black tea. I liked it a lot! Good soup. I also had some potstickers. Grist for an early lunch today. Du jour- roasted red pepper tomato soup. Grist remains one of my favorite restaurants in the greater Dayton area. I haven’t posted a bowl from here in a few months, because if I posted every bowl I have here, this would just be a Grist fan page. Today’s offering is another variant of tomato soup- this time, a little thinner, a nice tangy taste with a little bit of warmth and smoke on the tail end from the roasted red pepper. The garnish of buffalo burrata and sicilian pistachio pesto (available in the cold case) add a little bit of variation spoonful to spoonful. Good soup! Today, a bit of lentil soup from Cedarland, on Linden. This restaurant is right along 35, in the plaza with Uhaul. Fare is Lebanese. I’ve loved this place for many years- I used stop in once a week for bread and hummus. I’ll probably get back to that… I deviated from my normal meat pies order and grabbed a bowl of lentil soup today. The soup is blended or mashed fairly smooth, but still quite thick (see second picture). You could eat this with a spoon, or even use some flatbread to scoop it up. It’s very tangy! Good soup. Bullpen- Taco Soup. I was teased this on Sunday, and asked not to be given any more information besides the name. So what is it? Well, it’s pretty much chili. They have great chili back here, typically on the thinner side. This morning’s bowl is significantly thinner than typical bullpen chili, with the addition of beans, corn, and some taco style seasoning. Typical chili mods of cheese and onion were not presented; a little bit of heat on this one. Good soup! My current favorite potatoes (really crispy on the outside but squishy inside, absolutely dialed in) round out the meal, plus an unquantified volume of coffee. #soup #dayton taken in Dots Market by @daytonsoupscene

Quick grocery soup- a return to DLM; turkey curry (soup?). I didn’t properly note the name, and the tag did not specify ingredients. Vegetables unidentifiable, turkey in small bits. This is towards the end of their soup day (pots up at 6:30 sharp), so slim pickings were anticipated; what remains is a thin, creamy broth packed with curry flavor. Another round of Little Saigon- last time I was here was back in April. Today I tried to order number 47- Mì Bò Saté / Saté Thin Sliced Beef. The lovely lady who runs this shop convinced me to do a few upgrades- house noodles instead of rice noodles, and three meats (I think shaved pork, sliced beef, and sliced hand made meatballs) instead of the normal beef. She tried to talk me down a little but I ordered spicy 4 out of 5. I think it’s fun how you have to argue with her a little bit about what you THINK want. She may have taken the spice conversation as an opportunity to pull a little prank on me- she kind of went nuts on this one. The noodles alone have a little bite to them, nice and slimy. No clumping together as others tend to. Worth the two bucks or whatever. The shaved meat was a little chewy, sliced was fairly tender, and the meatballs were kind of squishy. All of them were good, but the meatball was my favorite. With the meats and noodles came various vegetables- cilantro, onion, and bean sprouts. Many contrasting textures. The broth… very spicy. Enough that my arms started cramping a little and I actually had some tears going on, which I don’t think had ever happened before. Once I got past the overwhelming spice, the broth had a little sweetness to it. Then, it was gone, and the spice was back. Bowl number two was absolutely brutal. I did not finish the broth, and it’s now in my fridge. I was out of the spicy grandma chili flake stuff so… thanks? When you come here, go easy on the spice level, this isn’t Thai 9, she’s real with it. I really liked this experience, even though she wouldn’t sell me one of those asian soup spoon things. Strawberry and Peach “Soups”; Dorothy Lane Market. A request by Dayton and Instagram’s own @thatssodaytoncore . The “quotes” should indicate this not to really be soup as typical- yes, it’s thick and primarily a liquid, but it isn’t really a soup, but I cannot give a categorical reason why. Both are primarily sweet soups, closer to a milkshake than a soup. Or melted ice cream. I bet they would both go so hard in a ninja creami. Both are built around the fruit, heavily backed by dairy- heavy cream for the strawberry, greek yogurt and whole milk for the peach. The peach gains a little more sweetness with orange juice and sugar, rounded out by a little bit of cinnamon. Strawberry, with brown sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. The peach is blended smooth, while strawberry has some chunks of fruit mixed in. I do not think these are meant to be heated, so I ate them cold, for dessert, after a nice dinner of sfeeha. I found myself repeatedly blowing on it like it was normal soup, so clearly it must be soup… Peach is very sweet. Probably too sweet. The cinnamon and orange push through big league. It’s kind of like eating a bowl full of jelly, even though peach jelly isn’t really a thing. Just in terms of texture and sweetness. It was a pretty hard eat, and honestly I couldn’t get through the small bowl I poured. It’s peach season at DLM (see last slide), so I forgive them for not having this recipe nailed down 100%. The strawberry was much better. Tastes pretty much like melted strawberry ice cream (my second favorite ice cream), which makes sense since the ingredients are just strawberry ice cream ingredients. I’m gonna go ahead and say the peach isn’t bad soup, just WEIRD soup. Strawberry is good soup! Dessert soup, but soup nonetheless. #dayton #soup by @daytonsoupscene

Back over at @blindbobs - du jour, a beef stew. This one was pretty chili adjacent. Lots of textures here- ground beef, thin broth, big chunks of potato, squishy bits of the usual vegetables. Tomato dominant. Kind of tastes like Spagettios (this is a compliment!) Good soup! I also had a sidecar of their GDA famous pickle soup. Yum! #soup #dayton taken in Blind Bob's by @daytonsoupscene
