Master Shaper Dale @wilsonjet @byrningspears hands over an Allan Byrne designed 6'9" 6 channel single fin earlier this year, I hadn't owned a single fin since 1979.
I never expected to have so much fun on this board as I have, I thought it was more for show, but it is all go
@raglanray
Keep up the great work
@ian_byrne_shaper too.
Still loving my twin fins, my 6'6 is getting the most love and will be requiring a replacement in the new year 2026.

September 29th 2021 - Open heart surgery(CABG) of a single graft to my LAD artery(widowmaker) was performed at the Gold Coast University Hospital. Complications arose in the form of Atrial Fibrillation(full speed heart rate of 190bpm!) lasting 20 minutes, only returning to my normal 50bpm 3 days later, seriously thought that I would die, I was isolated from my family because of Covid and thought those nurses, doctors and my surgeon were the last faces I would ever see.
A recovery plan was followed that allowed me to return to surfing 3 months later, not like it was, but that was my goal, to get back to riding ocean waves to the sand.
As my GP of 45 years said to me following my heart attack 20 years prior.
"You not surfing Dave, will kill you quicker than heart disease"
Wind the clock forward to July 30th 2025, at my cardiologist's review after a Stress Echocardiogram that tested my heart's function at full load(make or break).
"David, you are fully recovered from your open heart surgery, whatever you are doing, keep it up"

Surfing is clearly good for me, enjoy doing what makes you feel good too.

A blast from my past 💥 23.09.2023
Getting flogged by a Greenmount drainer is nothing compared to getting flogged by radiation for skin cancer.

Thanks Alex @flying___pixels for the drone view
@ian_byrne_shaper for the @thehouseofbyrne 6'6" Twin Fin.

Another year - Another surgery
After ten years with an enlarged prostate, and seven and half years on the public waiting list with an elevated PSA. This year I recieved the call, a few Urology tests later, I was lined up for a TURP procedure when the Qld Gov outsourced patients to Private Surgeons to reduce wait list queues.
I got one of the best surgeons, and it was performed at the Gold Coast Private Hospital August 20, 2025.
Discharged home two days later to recovery.
A phone call a week later from my surgeon, my biopsies were all benign.
All was going well until resuming my blood thinner to prevent stroke and heart attacks from blood clots, but noticed blood getting heavier in my urine.
Two weeks Post Op I took myself to ED with heavy bleeding early one morning, a bit unsettling, but with further tests and swapping my blood thinner for Aspirin.
The bleeding eased and began healing again.
Three weeks Post Op, feeling better now and walking longer distances with ease, but won't be sitting on a bicycle seat or a surfboard for a while longer.
Burleigh Heads is my favourite headland for my mind and body healing rehab over the next 3-5 weeks.
Thanks to my family, Neo and friends for your support and kind words during the latest episode of DB's medical procedures, thanks for sharing yours too.
Over 50 - get a PSA test, good luck from there

A time for reflection on my surfing life in 2025.

As I age(68) and my body works in a different way to when I was younger,
I keep working at being the best version of myself that I can be, both in the water and on land, in mind and body.
I have reached an age that sees me retired from working, not because of wealth and certainly not because of health but because I want to live my later years of life the way I want to and on my terms.

I give thanks to the medical support I receive that recognised and encouraged me to keep surfing whenever I want to, it gives me a level of fitness and mental health that is good for my overall happiness in life, not every surf is a good session, but the good surfs out number the bad ones(there's no such thing really)

I give special thanks to my family and friends near and far who support my love of surfing since I first started learning in 1969(still learning now)
I give thanks to the makers of my custom shaped surfboards that have given me the bulk of my surfing memories, which I'll share with anyone who loves to talk about surfing as much as I do

Thank you
Dave Bowie

I'm a Happy Man....
Now I have my copy of
"You should have been here yesterday"
to play at home to help my family and friends understand why I love surfing like I do and why it is actually very good for me.
The added features, including interviews and the background work that the Australian and New Zealand Surf Film Archives staff has been doing to restore boxes of films of our surfing history are truly appreciated as we age and our memories fade of such an incredibly important passage of time in surfing.
