Someone with a significantly broader understanding of how the algorithmic overlords operate told me you shouldn’t say things like “out now!” or “link in bio!” on these platforms. Otherwise, you’ll be punished by our modern-day Big Brother* not pushing your post to the general public. Since my most urgent musical goal will always be to reach as many people as possible**, I’ll refrain from such foolish behavior.

However, I do want to tell you I released a song today, and it’s called ‘Birds Die Out Of Sight’. I wrote the following promotional sentences to elucidate the lyrics: ‘The song describes the pain of an inevitable farewell. Everything you try is futile in the face of this morbid prospect: after all, in a cycle of self-destruction, nothing and no one is spared.’ Sounds immensely joyous, doesn’t it?

All cynical irony aside, it would mean a lot if you’d listen, doesn’t have to be today or tomorrow, but I promise it’s worth listening to before you kick the metaphorical bucket.

I want to thank Djamilo*** for mixing, Maurits for mastering, Maas for the artwork, Samuel for photo- and videography and Kick for providing me a place to write. Furthermore, I am forever indebted to Sal and Olaf for their constructive feedback and encouraging words, I am nothing but crippling insecurity without you.

Tonight, I’m playing at Meneer De Wit for an aptly named ‘single release party’; doors open at 19:30. I sincerely hope to see you there.

All of my love,

Teun

Voor de Doorbraak: D.B. Caulfield

‘How Deep Is Your Love’ by the Bee Gees is generally regarded as one of humanity’s sappiest love songs, and I’m not here to dispute that, but you have to admit that it possesses a strange, almost alchemical power to bring people together. When I first heard a certain John F. cover it, I instantly knew I had found one of my favorite songs of all time.* The real kicker turned out to be it’s also one of my mom’s favorites. So there you have it: empirical evidence of its unifying properties.

When I finished my set at the single release party (04/09, Meneer De Wit), I had already secretly planned for an encore.** I had prepared two songs and, in what I can only describe as a moment of noble democracy, I let the audience decide between the slow-dance disco classic and ‘Runaway’ by Del Shannon. The archival footage above leaves little room for doubt: they chose wisely.

This moment of singing together in that basement was, I swear to you, one of the happiest of my life. And people who know me know that I’m not one for joyful exaggeration, quite the opposite, in fact. I hope the Gibb brothers, wherever they are, whatever they’re doing, know that they set something beautiful in motion with this masterpiece and that it continues to make people happy to this day. If you happen to encounter them, do me a solid and pass that along.

All of my love,

Teun

**I think it was in fact the infamous ‘fuck!’ during the second chorus in his rendition at La Cigale (Paris, 2006) that really sold it to me.
**Every artist who still pretends their encore is an act of spontaneity should look at themselves in the mirror and wonder why they can’t be honest with both themselves and their audience. taken in Meneer de Wit by @dbcaulfieldofficial

It turns out Instagram has a feature where you can caption each piece of visual or audiovisual entertainment separately. Although I think my usual verbosity under posts on this platform is already more than enough to satisfy the lit bros* looking for sustenance in a place that doesn’t reward it, I thought I might as well try it out.

My dear friend Djamilo (better known as De Schaar Van Oost) checking if we need his expertise as a FOH, the sweetheart.

“I’m not denying anything, I’m simply asking you to define alcoholic.”

The drive is and will always be the concept of fear.

Moving around in a dance-like fashion seems only mildly appropriate, I realize now in retrospect.

The rehearsal is often both the easiest and the hardest part of a performance, as clearly showcased here by my brother Olaf and me. taken in Meneer de Wit by @dbcaulfieldofficial

I know, the whole concept of an elaborate ‘aftermovie’ is kind of done at this point.* And yet here we are. The thing is frizzy-haired creative wunderkind Samuel Nachtegaal captured something definitely worth sharing. On this illustrious night on the 4th of September, a lot of people came together to experience that all a person truly needs is love.** If I were a pastor in a church in the southern regions of the United States***, I would probably say something like: ‘this was not just another evening, this was a celebration of life!’

Anyhow, I highly encourage you to watch the whole thing, especially if you were there (in which case, I cannot thank you enough). I promise you it’s worth it if you want to give your Friday a bit more of a melancholy edge.

And one more thing before I once again end my endless rambling. When I was younger, I used to be ever so scared of dying without ever being really seen (and I still am, in many ways), but this single release party fulfilled something in me that’s hard to explain. My gratitude is greater than the number of beers I drank afterward to cope with all these positive feelings. As you’d say after a dreadful first date: let’s do this again sometime.

All of my love,

Teun

It is genuinely difficult to express the degree to which I am thankful for what happened last Friday. Though “difficult” here is less a matter of words being inadequate (they are, but that’s besides the point) and more that this feeling I’m trying to describe has the quality of seeming so emotional that I couldn’t possibly do it justice in an Instagram caption. Let’s just say this was a single-release party I will try my absolute best to never forget.

For a minute there*, my usual cynicism and a general lack of glass-half-full orientation** all faded away. The huge turnout of friends and family, the beautiful playing by support acts Olaf Putker and Former Resident, the kind words I received afterwards, it all warmed my heart in a way that made me aware of how unfamiliar this overwhelming sensation of unguarded warmth is to me.

Incidentally, in case you haven’t noticed (and there is no particularly big reason you should have), my single “Birds Die Out Of Sight” has been available to listen to for a couple of days now, check it out if you haven’t. It does mean a lot to me***.

All of my love,

Teun

Here’s something I don’t see many artists* talk about: it’s incredibly awkward to perform photo and/or video shoots in public. You tend to feel like a rat in a cage**, if the rat in question voluntarily chose to step into the cage to promote his musical endeavors on various social media platforms.

More recently, I’ve even come to a point where I believe the more awkward the shoot is, the better the end result.*** Although that’s a conclusion I’ve come to via subjective experience, more than anything.

And one more thing before I end my rambling, in case it isn’t clear from my obvious shortcomings in heroin chic sex appeal; I don’t do photo shoots for @voguemagazine, I simply delight in telling innocent lies to British tourists. It’s one of life’s greatest pleasures living in the city colloquially known as Mokum, in my humble opinion.

All of my love,

Teun

*Artists in the broadest sense word, including performative men who write sappy indie songs about how unhappy they are with themselves, but are unwilling to put in the work to turn their lives around (yours truly, par exemple).
**Despite the obvious rage, as so eloquently described by WPC.
***As clearly showcased by my recent photo- and videographic undertakings with Samuel Nagtegaal, a frizzy-haired creative wunderkind and integral part of the late Scenic Wonderland created by my brother Olaf.

First things first: the pre-save link for ‘Birds Die Out Of Sight’ (out 04/09) is live where you’d expect to find it.* You can argue amongst yourselves if such things matter in this day and age, but I’ll be the first to admit it helps me (and the algorithms of streaming platforms, sure) believe my music has some sort of audience.

Now we’ve got the usual online promotion out of the way, let me tell you something. Up until this moment, I’ve only shared professionally shot content, which is to say the version of me you’ve seen has been curated, airbrushed and generally polished into something approaching market ready. But my inner influencer (bless its conflicted, authenticity craving heart), felt it was time for something a bit more personal and vulnerable like a seemingly spontaneous snippet of me rehearsing.**

Furthermore, for the second time on this page, you’re hearing the bridge section of the song I’m releasing in a week and a half. An unusual choice***, I know, but the ironic pride I feel concerning my lyric about Paul you-know-who is undeniable, hence the compulsive revisitation.

Anyhow, that’s probably enough rambling for one caption. We’ll hopefully see each other at the single release party on the 4th of September in Meneer de Wit.

All of my love,

Teun

*In the (un)fortunate case you’re new here in this hellscape we call Instagram, most people refer to it as ‘link in bio’ or something along that vein.
**As if this wasn’t already my 32nd take, after I spent 15 minutes trying to position my phone camera so that it would catch my freshly moisturized face bathed in natural sunlight streaming through the window perfectly.

Dear people of the internet,

As far as rumours go in this algorithmic age we live in, they are indeed true: D.B. Caulfield, solo project of the songwriter colloquially known as Teun Putker (aka me), is releasing new music. ‘Birds Die Out Of Sight’ will be out on the 4th of September, the first single of my upcoming debut solo record Litost*.

I am thoroughly overjoyed to be sharing this music with you, I did put a lot of blood, sweat and tears in it (figuratively speaking, mostly). No pre-save as of yet, so you’re mostly off the hook for the infamous LIB**, but for those interested; there is a ticket link for the single release show in Meneer de Wit (also 04/09, because I am nothing if not a believer in the power of a singular, memorable date). For what it’s worth, I sincerely hope to see some of you there.

All of my love,

Teun

*For a proper definition, refer to the caption of the video posted on 17/08

‘’Litost is a word that defies translation into other languages. It denotes a feeling as vast as a fully extended accordion, a feeling that is a synthesis of many others: sorrow, pity, self-reproach and longing. A state of torment created by the sudden sight of one’s own misery.’’ - Milan Kundera
