One of the biggest mistakes new IT pros and homelab builders make?

No documentation.

You get a couple devices going, everything’s working — so you skip the part where you write things down. Then a few weeks go by, something breaks, and now you’re stuck guessing:

-What IP did I assign that VM again
-Was that service running on this machine or the other one?
-Why is there an IP conflict all of a sudden?

When you don’t document, troubleshooting becomes a guessing game.

But when you do? You save time, avoid conflicts, and make scaling or rebuilding way easier.

Whether you’re managing 2 devices, 20, or 100 good documentation turns chaos into clarity.

One of my favorite things to do with people in our community is hands-on labs & projects! 👨🏾‍💻 👨🏽‍💻 🧑🏼‍💻

It’s one thing to cover topics & receive new information, it’s a whole other thing to put them into practice to get experience.

Side note thought I’d drop this definition:

Implement this mindset when you study and watch how it changes your approach.

I also recommend making it a habit to define words you may not fully understand with a quick Google search as you encounter them.

I’ve made it a mental rule not to move past a word I don’t understand in my studies, or at least I always try not to.

It might sound simple, but I think we all do this at times, then get to the end of a page and wonder why we didn’t understand what we just read.

Don’t just read to get done. Read to understand.

Ever wonder how your laptop or phone just magically gets an IP address when you hop on WiFi?

That’s DHCP at work.

It stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, but don’t let the name scare you. It’s basically a service that hands out IP addresses and other network settings to devices automatically so you don’t have to do it manually.

It’s one of those things that just works in the background — but if you’re getting into IT, especially help desk or sysadmin roles, you need to understand how it works and where it can break.

No more static IP struggles. No more IP conflicts. Just clean, automated networking.

Is Intel AMT/vPro a viable Out-of-Band remote management solution for homelabs in 2025?

I’ve been using MeshCommander & MeshCentral for a few months now and I must say I feel like vPro is like a hidden gem I’ve slept on due to bad experiences in the past.

Check out my latest blog where I go over how I’m using MeshCentral & MeshCommander with Intel AMT(Active Management Technology) on a Minisforum MS-01 for some simple Out-of-Band management in a small lab environment.
